OCR Physics A - G485: Fields, Particles & Frontiers of Physics - June 2012

Hey Everyone

I've decided to get a revision thread going for the OCR FPFF June 2012 Exam.
I know it's pretty early, but this is going to be a hard exam. I usually leave it late to start my revision, but this time I need an A* in this exam to get into my first choice :eek3: And I'm not in school anymore, so I have to teach myself the content :s-smilie:

So yeah, use this thread to discuss the topics, past papers, useful sites, revision tips etc.
This is what I've come up with so far...

I might try to get it off my teacher and maybe scan it in...

Revision's not bad... this isn't my first time doing it, so I know a lot of it already. How about you?

Thought I'd post to subscribe...

Bit of an odd module this, lots of boring stuff (medical physics)

I've not actually started..
just flicking through pages at the moment.
Probably, going to start serious revision in two weeks (ie.East holidays)
what about you?

that would be great, thanks  yeah, same here - i've done it before too; which is a bit of an advantage :smug:

haha  medical physics has got to be my least favourite module. i just see it as biology -not physics- so i'm immediately less interested:boring:

it's going alright so far  although i haven't actually done much yet...
have you learned all of the content yet?

I got a B. I think I was about 10 UMS marks of an A :frown: I kind of messed up in the last exam... How about you?

nope,we haven't done space and all the "charge" stuff and a bit of medical physics is left..hence,a lot to cover before exam leave! :colone:

I got an A... but I got about 90% on each of he other modules, so I'm retaking this last one to try and get the pesky A*

Which bits do you like best/least in this unit?

haha  yeah that's quite a bit to do...
What are your physics teachers like? I had one who was really good and organised and another who was pretty rubbish :s-smilie:

ooh, well done on getting that A  Yeah, i get the feeling that the A* is going to be a lot of work... but I'm determined to get it!

I quite like Capacitance and Nuclear Physics. I really dislike Medical Physics - I've always felt it was way too much like Biology :/ Space and Electric & Magnetic Fields are alright. I just wish there was mechanics as that's my real strength :yep:

My favourite by far is nuclear physics. I actually quite like Medical physics, and I'm okay with electric and magnetic fields (with the exception of transformers...). Capacitance I find a little boring, though it's a small module and relatively easy. I don't like the space physics section though - it's too wishy-washy for my liking.

So are you going to classes this year or are you doing it on your own?

i'm doing it on my own :yep: when i was in school, a lot of the topics we focused on during revision was stuff i felt comfortable with (it all depended on what most of the class wanted to do...) so i thought it would just be easier this year, if I did it myself and focused on what I need to work on. Also, this way I don't get any homework

Are you still in school or are you teaching yourself? You were the one who created the imperial thread, weren't you? heard any news?
I'm pretty sure this exam will be the death of me.

I've got 8 exams in total; had I not taken 3 early, I would have had 11 :puke:
I don't actually technically need Physics in my offer though, but that would mean I HAVE to get an A in Further Maths. Which I actually think is more likely. UGGGHHHHH I just hate this module sooooooooooo much. Unit 4 was quite good, and I scraped an A which was good enough for me!
How's revision going for you guys? Have you started? If yes, how much have you done, and how are you guys planning on revising for it?
(Apologies for the interrogation! :p:)

ooh, that's quite a lot :/
Yeah, unit 4 is wayyy better than this module. I started 'revising' a couple of weeks ago but haven't done much yet. I've got mates who are back from uni, which can be distracting :s-smilie:
Revision-wise, I'm going through questions in the book, watching videos online and I'll do some past papers closer to the exam.

It's not going amazing tbh. I'm just majorly stressing about this module. It's just that we've got sooo much more to cover in so less time. Plus, the fact that one of my teachers makes no effort to actually teach us doesn't help either.
My way of revising is making notes on each bullet point on the spec, so I know everything I need to. Only after I've learnt(/memorised in some cases) it all do I start past papers.
So far I've learnt electric fields, magnetic fields, capacitors and the x-rays section in medical physics (which I have lost :sadnod:) so I've got plenty more to do  How far have you got?
