I believe Tegfan and Bryn Dinas are replacing JMJ for Welsh halls, so unfortunately these won't be an option unless you speak Welsh. My experience of Normal Site is that its alot like an old school, the kitchens (in my oppinion) really smell and its a smell that has been worn in over the decades, it also seems that there is'nt alot of space for your food considering there's a fair amount of people sharing the kitchen. Normal site is also abit of a mission to get to no matter where you go, same for St Marys, so if you do end up living in either i'd suggest bringing a bike. You could choose Reichal which is shared bathroom on Ffridd site so is quite well situated.

I am currently living in old Ffridd with En suite and i would recommend it. It is very social as most people will be living on Ffridd site so you're living close to your course friends. I find the price quite reasonable, though i would rather have a reduction and not have a cleaner, especially if you are unlucky enough to come face to face with the head cleaner :s-smilie: I have gone quite far into my overdraft but this was from overspending by going out too much, but i know a air few people who have been good with their finances and haven't gone into their overdraft yet.

New halls are nice but have alot of problems which i predicted would happen when choosing my halls in that they don't find the problems until people have lived in them, quite a few times they have had problems with water and electricity and i believe Peris is having trouble wth its foundation :s-smilie:

I hope thats helped

when can we start applying for accommodation?
I was shown around the older ensuite halls on my last visit and I hated them
Being quite a tall person I found the ceilings too low and got quite clastrophobic, plus the breezeblock walls didn't give them a very 'homely' feel
Bangor won't send out accommodation forms or put them on-line until the end of may beginning of June from what I remember. they do seem to do it later than all other universities but manage to get it all processed at lightning speed so don't worry if you've not heard anything yet on accommodation.

Anyone who lives in Tegfan or Bryn Dinas this year have been deprived of sleep considerably this year, as both have had a lot of fire alarms (Tegfan moreso than Bryn Dinas), so I wouldn't have recommended them even if they were an option (which they won't be as they're set to become the new Welsh halls). The quiet halls for next year are M block of Y Borth and Bryn Eithin on the other side of the city. I shall be in Idwal next year, so will be in one of the new halls (opened this year). Personally, I think you should just go with the option most suitable to you. Dan and the others have explained things well enough so I don't need to repeat them!

I agree Bryn Dinas has been appaling this year as they always seem to be standing in the car park at 3am, but Tegfan has been pretty good as we have only had 1 since christmas although we had about 4 before christmas but they were due to idiots setting fire to toast, and its just luck that you dont have these people in your building.

Well yes, I'm in H block of Cefn y Coed, so I tend to hear the Tegfan fire alarms, and I was getting rather annoyed every time it went off in Tegfan or Bryn Dinas. However, I was in Emrys Evans last year so I know what it's like to have loads of fire alarms at stupid o clock. I personally would avoid Bryn Dinas for the fire alarms, and Tegfan if you want some sleep.
I'm in K block Cefn y Coed, we've only had a fire alarm twice and they were planned ones, Bryn Dinas is the worst for it though, with so many people there's bound to be more accidents.
Bangor accommodation seems to be very expensive for next year. I know they've built a lot of new 'halls' but it seems a bit too much so I shall probably rule it out on that basis. Everything seems to be £3.5k apart from the really old buildings which is a lot relative to the £2.2k to £2.7k I'll be looking at elsewhere. It's a shame because I like Bangor.

You could come to normal site, it's only £2650.50, they may be older then the other buildings but they're only 60s or 70s & the rooms are a really nice size
Downsides to here is that it takes 20-30 mins to walk to lectures if you're main arts/morrisons & also shaired loos
I haven't had any problems with this though
Tends to be very friendly & you can also wonder round the buildings far more easily then in the new ones as it's long coridors instead of the flat concept

Normal site rules :woo:
Oh & there's the co-op & pubs in menai bridge which are closer for normal site people then bangor itself, only 10-20 mins walk away

Thanks guys!

I can't really consider the halls where you have to move out over the breaks because a)there is no way I can ask my mother to cart stuff to and from Bangor 6 times and b) I might not want to be at home for all of the Xmas and Easter breaks due to family problems. (Not my Mum, one of my siblings.)

I'm seriously not likely to drink much. I'm terrified of being sick so the most I have ever had has been 5 vodkas and lemonades (well two double and one single) as I stopped when I felt tipsy. TBH drinking doesn't have a great appeal to me. Don't worry I am going to socialise (I've already figured out at least 4 societies I want to join) and I will go out, I just won't drink.... apart from St Patrick's Day but I'm spending that in Dublin (don't tell me I won't be able to afford it/whatever... a girl can dream! Will be going to Boston one year in the distance future for it as well. With a trip up to Toronto to pay homage in the broken toilet alleyway and go to McGinty's Bar (well McVeigh's is what it's called in real life).... I love the Boondock Saints....)

Anyhow, vegan food is generally dirt cheap (well it's more expensive when you use the meat/dairy/egg substitutes but I don't (apart from oat or rice milk in tea which is around £1.50 for a litre but lasts for a week when opened which is how long it takes me to use)) and seeing as the mothership will take me to a supermarket and do a £50+ish shop when I arrive (it's a thing she done for my siblings) and I'll use it to stock up on all the long-life stuff (lentils... lots of lentils, tins of pulses, pasta, rice etc. Oat milk! omg she can so buy me a load of oak milk for my tea.....)

Hmmmm... breeze blocks... as long as I can put posters up I can cope.. (although I doubt they'll accept my 150+ posters, calender pics (yes I'm sad) and postcard collection..)

I've spoken to my brother and he says that I won't cope in shared halls. He uses the cloakroom when he's back as it's near the spare room and it will be at least a month, more like three, before I will be able to use it again after he's gone. (Told you I have issues :P ) So shared probably won't be a good idea. Plus the shared halls are quite far away from Morrisons aren't they? (Morrisons and Tesco are my best bet for vegan food... well Sainsbury's is actually the best, followed by Tesco, then ASDA, then Morrisons, then M&S and then places like Aldi etc. Not sure yet how I'm going to cope without Sainsbury's  )

Are there any health food type shops in Bangor? Even a Holland and Barrett?

OK, if it is possible to survive on £72 a week then I should cope. Do you have any idea what Y Borth is like? I probably would be better off in a quiet block (again according to my brother who's done 5 years at uni and knows me pretty well).

EDIT: Just done a quick google and there's a Holland and Barrett and a Julian Graves but are there any independent health food shops?

i just noticed you said you won't be drinking...me neither, glad there is more than just me as a non drinker...but i also will be social etc etc! :-)

you sound like my kind of person lol...are you thinking of going for quiet halls then?

Yep! M block in Y Borth

I think you'll find that if you want Y Borth - you'll be getting X block.
Reply 53
Nope, M block

Please note that this hall is composed of 4 BLOCKS.

M BLOCK is reserved for those undergraduates requiring a quieter environment.

N BLOCK and P BLOCK are predominately for postgraduate students.

X BLOCK is for other undergraduate students
Reply 54
M block is the quiet block - but not all requests for a quiet environment may be met - depends on how many wish to have a quiet environment or if they have a disability/illness which needs the quiet environment.

That being said, if it's anything like my block this year, you'd be OK in a normal block, and M block is right next to L block of Cefn y Coed - where some of the noisiest residents have resided this year - hopefully you'll get your choice though.
Bring back Emrys Evans

(if only so I could help prospective students and share my "horror stories" .... actually it wasn't that bad)

With regards to the buildings, the brand new halls (lovely shiny ones you would have been shown) are really not that great. the "old new halls" on ffridd site are just as good but about 10 years older. infact some of them are even better than the new halls which have had a few flaws with them.

Completely true, im in Alaw - my loo has broken at least 6 times (other people have even had theirs replaced - should have had mine done too lol), and there are cracks all over the place, on the top floor, the big set of windows looks like it's about to fall out.

Hey Im going to study English Literature at Bangor in september, and I will probably be looking at quiet accomodation  We sound very similar, I don't drink much, am also up for a good time, and currently vegetarian, possibly vegan if the doctor says its ok!

Anyway, I found this thread because I have no idea about accomodation at Bangor... St. Marys looks nice, but do you think its a bit far without a car? x (Tolkien rulesss)
