Renault Clio cambelt change

Hi, I own a Renault clio 1.2 dynamique 04 plate. It has done approx 56k miles and is due for its cam belt change. I have been getting several quotes from Renault dealers and specialists near to home and was wondering whether these quotes are suitable, or whether I should continue to search for cheaper quotes. Thanks.

Renault dealer O
£480 (cambelt and water pump change)

Renault dealer M
£370 (cambelt and water pump change)

Renault Specialist S
£245 (cam belt change and said no need to replace water pump???)
A water pump is so cheap it is foolish not to change it when the belts are getting done.

Personally I would go for the renault specialist. If you want the water pump doing it shouldnt be much extra, as once they have it all apart to change the belt it doesn't take much more time to do the pump as well. With the pump included it should still work out cheaper than either of the main dealers.

The pump might not necessarily be required, but they might be suggesting you replace it based on the logic that the belt won't need doing again until around 120k miles by which time the pump may well be shot, and doing the pump on its own will probably be as expensive as the cam belt change.

I'd go for changing the water pump at the same time, it won't be hugely more expensive and could well save you grief in the long run.

It'd be really daft to change a pump but not the cambelt!

I agree. Good independant garages are usually a good way to go, ask around if anyone knows a good one, its the best way to find them.

I would check out some independents but umm, those prices do sound about right for a dealer, but no need to go with them. Most dealers don't know their arse from their elbow anyway.

i would go for the cam belt and water pump coz if the water pump does break it might cost more that having then both done at the same time

Yeah, I'd look around for an independent garage, that's what I did. I took my car to one when it looked like I had a leak in my water pump and they said I needed my cam belt replacing as well and would cost around £200 and something. Anyway, it turned out that my water pump wasn't leaking, just something wrong with the valve, and now I've just discovered that one of my front headlights has gone. Bloody car has cost me a fortune these past 6 weeks with car insurance, road tax, MOT and service and repairs!
