I think i might try torrent somewhere like Mcdonalds or Starbucks, anyone know if you can do it using their wifi?

I'm at Castle Court, I left steam online when I left so I can't play offline due to that silly bug and so can't access any of my games to play. :holmes:
I'm at St Mary's too. Having trouble with Pidgin as well as what's already been said. 60Mbps+ here compared to my farm-home 2Mbps is absolute torture when I can't do anything with it.

Those wishing to download 'stuff', I recommend using web services such rapidshare or megaupload. As this is done through your web browser, it uses port 80 so you should have no issues.

All I want, really, is ten seconds of normal internet so I can access steam and then go offline so I can play my games :colondollar:

Shame I bought a desktop or I'd be all over Starbucks/McDonalds in the town.

Find someone with a HTC, if it's like my Desire then you can plug it into your desktop with the USB cable and use the 3G network for a bit. It's a little slow and eats bandwidth, but is unrestricted

I'm also at Newcastle and I play mostly on steam, I can't even login to play singleplayer in my spare time... I'm praying that the upcoming singleplayer titles like Skyrim won't be steam activated or DRM protected because otherwise it's bye bye hobby for a whole year >_>

Is this kind of fascist internet policy common in the UK or is it rare cases like Newcastle?

University IT resources are provided for academic study ...

duiscouraging or banning the use of gaming devices is an effective way to restriuct bandwidth use on none core activities.

if you want open 'net access private halls or live out ...

Also porn. Porn streaming okay?
It is possible to game on steam and torrent using a TCP connection (openVPN) to a third-party VPN server (£5-£10/month, unless you have the resources to set one up for yourself at home) via the universitys VPN.
This also makes all of your activity private.
No solution for PSN and XBL as of yet.

Sounds pretty complex.

Anyone got XBL working in Castle Leazes?

This sounds really bad :frown: Is there no way to sort out Xbox Live? I hold an offer for Law but am seriously considering going into private halls or something (although I wouldn't really want to) because I do play on my Xbox quite a bit and not having access to Xbox Live would be soooo ****.
I'm hoping to get into St Mary's, Castle Court, Victoria Halls or Central Link this year ... anyone know if I can get on PSN or Xbox live in any of these? been sharing my brother's ps3 for the last couple of years and can finally afford to get my own so I'd rather be able to use it when I go to uni....

Has anything been sorted regarding this?

Don't think so no...thank god I am in a house next year and not in halls...non-restrictive internet!

There's ways to get past it for some games, e.g wow, its annoying though.

Hmmm...guess I'd better get used to buying games off disk! You can still play your offline games on steam if you select the offline button before disconnecting from a network though, can't you?
