Hello there,

I got conditional offer from the University of Manchester. They accepted me onto Engineering with an Integrated Foundation Year course. I have no idea about how is like to study foundation Year in Manchester University. I haven't decided to go to Manchester University too but I would like to listen people who completed this course in manchester and can give me some information about the foundation year course structure also such as how many students gonna be there? How much of them can achive to progress onto first year of their degree? If someone can help me about that I will be pleased to hear.

Thanks in advance

Thank you very much for your reply. You gave me more hope. I would like to ask you this question too. I have been learning English since 2 years and I completed my high school for 2 years ago. I am quite worried about my background knowledge about Maths and Physics. I forgot most of the topics where I already studied before. Now, What do you think about that Attending foundation Year at the University of Manchester could improve my background in physics and maths? Do you think Is it gonna be beneficial for me? If you can also comment about that. I will be grateful to you my mate.

Many thanks

Well I know it helps a lot because those are basically the only 2 topics you will study and you can always get help if needed, but you really shouldn't struggle with the first few topics which should be fairly basic maths etc if I aced them, I'm sure if they've accepted you, you shouldn't struggle, but yes depending on what course you want to do, this will be extremely beneficial to you, it means you can study any engineering course at the uni and you will be ahead of the rest of the class, what are your other options though?

just read you want to do aerospace, yes it's great  also Manchester although low(er) in the u.k rankings that is only due to stupid student satisfaction ratings else it'd be top 10 for sure, also Manchester is one of the ones which anywhere in the world you can go easily as it's higher in the world rankings than the u.k ranking

Actually, I have a offers from the Southampton and Sheffield too but If I looked at the rankings seperately in the UK and in the world. Between this 3 universities, I can see manchester ranks far higher than other two. but in the UK, the ranking is doesn't seem very close to world rankings. It is very hard to decide which universities are better. In the world rankings, manchester comes 18th in aerospace engineering but in the UK , it is very low and I don't know why? But on the other hand, sheffield and southampton ranks very high, almost top in the UK for aerospace engineering but in the world rankings these both two universities ranks lower than manchester in the same subject. So I don't know which one I should choose to go? And If I choose foundation year, it means I also will continue at the same University to my undergraudate degree so it is very important for me to start from the right university. If you don't mind, Are you a student in the University of Manchester?
thanks again
I will be soon  I used to visit very regularly as my ex went there, but to me it's the most amazing university ever! thank god my ex left haha :L but yes the UK rankings are messed up, if you don't take student satisfaction, which seems to be a tad flawed as most people going to Manchester seem to love it then it would easily be top 10 in the UK, they're 3rd in the country for research etc... Sheffield I have heard is brilliant for it and I have friends there who love it, but I didn't like it as much as manc, southampton ranks highly...personally i dislike it...doesn't have the same roots as manchester etc, but if you are going to be working abroad or might plan to, take manchester if not perhaps Sheffield would be the better option, are they all foundation course offers, and what are your offers? also 18th isn't low... there are 116 uni's Brunel is specialist engineering and ranks 40th or something ... but tell me what you want from a university that way i can help a bit more, like social life, type of people you want to meet, what sort of accommodation and architecture you like, Manchester's buildings look fantastic! urmm just some background, as your offer is conditional you have got your insurance too... have you visited either of them?

I haven't visited to Manchester and others as well but I will be visiting respectively them soon. My heart goes more Manchester because Manchester University is well-known in the world and has a very high reputation. If I consider manchester's world rankings, they are brilliant for me but the most important thing for me right now, I want to find out first about foundation year. Do you know how many students are there approximately in engineering with an foundation year course? Are they mostly from international countries or there are also students from the UK as well? Do you also comment about Can most of them achieve to pass overall grade for automatically entering first year of their chosen degree? What is the average grade to be able to progress onto first year? And Could you also make it clear, Am I gonna see only physics and maths during the foundation year? If you can tell me more about those questions than I will ask you other questions about the manchester's sociallife, type of people I want to meet and what's like to live in Manchester etc...First, I would like to give my priority to university's foundation year programme. Secondly, when I will decide to go to manchester than I will focus on accommodation and other things. I asked you a lot of questions , I hope, it doesn't make you bored. Thanks in advance

I've got from all of them offer and starting from the Foundation Year.I am coming from the different education background and therefore They want me to be familiar and reach the right level for university. I also want you to notice that, Manchester ranks 18th in the world (Not in the UK) for aerospace and also ranks generally 29th so who doesn't want to go to that kind of university? It must be pleasure for students to go and study there. Manchester seems quite old university as well from the pictures and very large too. As I see, Manchester university located at the heart of the city but Is it not disturbing students How they can study in a noisy places? Am I saying wrong? Manchester graudates also one of the most targeted by the employees so and 23 nobel prize winners and a lot of famous people who studied there, more and more. Student satisfactions might be wrong in my opinion because some universities students are not satisfied to study but they voted good in spite of they don't want because of this things will have effects on university's future rankings so maybe some universities doesn't deserve to placed in good position but most students care about the rankings therefore these kind of universities are attracting them. Some students obviously tell lies for just make the university's ranks better.

wow, a lot to work with here haah, I have no real idea of how mnay there are, when I was at interview they said 200-300 ish? but obviously you won't see all of them, it's a big mix of UK and Foreign, most if not all the ones I have spoken to so far are English, but that's because I don't know that many internationals etc or not many are on this site, urmm the pass mark is 60% to do Beng 70% Meng but that must continue through your first year on the course as well, If you work you should have no problem passing, so if you don't get 60% you aren't accepted onto the next year. And yes it will be mainly maths and physics with practicals , tad bit of computing etc, everything you need for the course, then you can join societies to pick up more things, on any foundation course it will be basically the same, however manchester's is run only in the uni, others tend to run them outside in schools and stuff, manchester is definatley the place to me IMO, good ranking, good fun, great course!

Will I have an interview if I would like to go to Manchester? I didn't get any news about interview from the University of Manchester. I hope, There is no interview because I won't be in UK during the summer if they want to talk with me. 70 percentage is high for MEng degrees but I just wish, I can succeed it. I must get at least 60% to be able to progress onto next year. I just hope, It is not gonna be difficult too. If Foundation year only about the basic things than I don't need to worry about that too much.

I would like to find out this too: When normally Manchester University asks for an interview? after accepting their offer or Do they normally send an notification to UCAS with the offer? As you might know that too, some students don't have an interview but some of them have so it varies.

hey anybody know how difficult it would be to progress to a bsc in physics? i heard its 70% but how difficult is that?
Reply 152
Im going on to physics next year, exams are next week so we'll find out, but 70% shouldn't be too hard. First semester i got 81% and i was nowhere near top, so even though physics is the hardest course to get onto it, most people going onto other courses get grades that could get onto it. Also i didn't really put much effort in. So you should be fine.
Hey guys,

I had an idea. Since we are all going to do a foundation year at Manchester it would be better if we get to know each other earlier. I searched on Facebook to see if there is a freshers group for foundation year students but I came up empty, so I created this group https://www.facebook.com/groups/382448668458520/

If you have selected the UoM as your firm choice then you should join this group!

Hey guys, about the facebook page, do you want your own page or do you want to join the one we have, and we'll just leave it to you but if you have questions you could ask us on there

Does anyone have info about how many students will be attending the course (approximately)? I saw someone mention there were 2 people with him and I don't think this is what I want...

I can think of four or five people that I know off the top of my head that did EPS foundation courses last year, and I'm not even in that faculty. There's definitely more than 2 there!
Anyone who has, or is currently doing this course; Is it worth it??
I did FY in Manchester University. There are more than 350 students and they recently announced to increase the number of students in overall as well. Foundation Year was very challenging for me. I eventually passed it many thanks to GOD but you will need to work really very hard in order to pass because foundation year's overall pass mark must be not lower than 60 so it is not easy to achieve and also if you would like to do Physics then you need to get at least 75 mark in order to study Physics degree. Most engineering subjects capped at 60 minimum. There are also 12 subjects totally in a year. 6 subject in each 2 semester. There are some people who failed to pass and there are some people who passed successfully. Also you will have opportunity to re-sit exam if you fail unit. The minimum mark you can get 30. if you are below it in any unit then they will kick you off directly so either you will apply to repeat for one more time or will go to different university. What would you like to study? If you need any information about Manchester University and Foundation Year then I can help you.
