Is the iPad any good for University work? Studying?

As the title says.. anyone got an iPad? What would you think about using it for essays etc at Uni? I cannot decide whether to get a MacBook pro or an iPad.. they both appeal to me but can only have one. It needs to be used for uni work though!

Thoughts?

Macbook Pro of course!! You can't do proper essays on an iPad. iPad isn't a laptop replacement it's a big ipod touch. Although personally I'd just get a regular Macbook or a cheaper laptop and save the money for socialising. I don't get what the point of a Macbook Pro - aren't they for graphic artists and such? A lot of money but if you don't need money for anything else then get that.

21/8/11 Edit: Lol, I now actually own an iPad 2, they're awesome.

iPad looks like the biggest waste of money ever.

Purely for people with cash to burn, has no real uses for university.
might as well get an iphone and be able to call people as ewll as everything else

I'm getting an iPad next week so I'll let you know.

I already have a MBP though and there's no way I'd choose an iPad over it. I'm just getting an iPad as a bit of a toy, beyond surfing the web and playing games I'm not sure how practical it is. I do think if course books can be downloaded to the iPad it will make things so much easier though. Carrying around the amount of books you need at uni can get pretty tiresome.

Yeah that's what I thought. Do let me know
If you want to do any sort of serious typing, get the macbook
No, it's not. Don't even consider it. Seriously.
a macbook would serve you extremely well. I know it may sound a tad more expensive but if you are thinking of getting an iPad just put some more dosh in and get a macbook.:yep:
Just get a cheap laptop. If you are only going to word process and use the internet, why waste your money.

Are you a *******?
The only way you could make an iPad moderately useful for studying is if you use it as a writing tablet to take notes, and if you use a keyboard dock to type up essays. Apart from that, it's as useful as a chocolate fireguard.

You do realise that a lot of the books for uni, a) will not be available electronically, and b) generally cost some £40-80?

I have a macbook pro 15" and wondering if an iPad would be better for day to day stuff at uni so i don't have to carry the MBP around all day.

I think that having both is the best option, use the mbp when you need too, take notes and out and about stuff on the iPad

There's this thing called a notepad that you can take notes on, they cost about a pound.

Seriously, you'll find that unless you're doing a computer based course, there's a 99% chance that nobody in your lectures uses technology for notes. It can annoy those around you and is generally more trouble than it's worth. If you have a large amount of disposable income (Not normally the case for the average student), go for it. But it's a hell of a lot of expense for the sake of abandoning pen and paper.
The title for this thread is too long. Should have been:

"Is the iPad any good?"

The answer is no, no it's not.

I can afford one, hence why I'm thinking of getting one, if i couldn't I would buy a notepad, so money isn't the issue here, its is it going to be any use?

I was always a skeptic but since owning one they are brilliant and you use them for reasons you never thought you would, people who are saying they are awful are those that don't own one, trust me you'll love it!
