Unsure about what to do

I'm coming to the end of my 1st year of a btec extended diploma in IT and business and I am planning on doing a business management related degree at university, preferably Aston.
I'm sure I will achieve atleast a triple distinction grade by the end of it. I have C's at gcse for Maths, English language and literature and two merits in Science.

However, I don't want to regret not doing a levels instead of the btec when it comes to uni. The main worries I have are coping with the exams at degree level and whether I not I will get accepted at a decent university. I'm also thinking about resetting GCSE maths next year to improve my grade and to just simply get the feel for exams again as it could be about 3 years without doing exams when I get to uni.

Opinions?

I did a GNVQ (old equivalent of BTEC) instead of A levels - I know have a 2:1 degree in Business Management and a Masters degree in Marketing. You will be fine. Why suffer the pressure and stress of A levels, when you can get to uni with a BTEC!

Thanks for the reply sciencegeek1. If I got a DDD at the end of my BTEC, what would the chances be of getting accepted onto a business management course at any decent uni, obviously not the top 20 or so? Would resitting GCSE maths be worthwhile if I already have a C? Should I do AS Maths next year or would it be a waste of time and too much work?

Well

Aston say DDD acceptable without A levels

Requiring 5 GCSEs at C+

So the DDD should be ok but the Btecs at Level 2 may be an issue (I think they will accept as equiv) ... you could always email them and ask

Not everyone is cut out for university, why go to one if you found it hard sitting for examinations.

However if you are keen and your family can afford for you to go to university, try to get into a foundation course offered by decent university. Offers will be lower. You will only sit for internal examination and you chance to progress to first year is better.

I hope the above will help.

Hello,

I have just graduated from business and management at Aston, although I have A levels I only have C grades at GCSE for all subjects (including two attempts to get a C in maths). I haven't had a problem with getting a placement/grad role or getting high marks in modules.

There are maths/statistics modules in th first year .. but because the requirements are low for maths to enter they have a maths centre in the library which is drop in and the exams are open book... I took the past papers to the maths centre got help from them took the answers in the exam and came out with high firsts in the exams.

I would suggest apply with your BTEC you don't need to do AS maths there is extra maths lessons for people who don't score high in maths for the modules anyway - they are very supportive and better than any maths teacher I have encountered at school/college. I know people who have BTEC's who have grad roles/who have performed well on their degree. But even if you choose coursework modules you will still have to do exams, and providing you work hard and revise for them I don't see why you can't score high in them.

I am really excited, it definitely looks amazing!! I love the way it's so small and yet still in the middle of the city, I'm nervous about uni but I think I've picked the right one

What did you study there?

I was really nervous about going at the point of crying before I moved in and after an hour I had made friends with everyone on my floor. it really is a fantastic place to study!

I studied business and management specialised in ICT.

I can literally walk to anything on campus in 5 minutes unlike people at say birmingham uni who have to get the bus or train to town and other areas. Aston is much better I have made so many friends from all over the world and the lecturers are awesome!

what have you applied for? are you moving into halls?

best advice: join societies in your first year - they look good on the cv and u make loads of friends

I know what you mean but surely if there is even some maths in a business management degree it would be beneficial for me to of done AS maths, don't you think?

yep it would be beneficial don't get me wrong and it's desirable but its not essential.. knowing what i know now I wouldn't do an extra year for it alone.

AS maths won't help with job hunting if an employer wants maths its usually the full A Level... it may help with some modules but you can easily get good grades by working hard on your degree.

what degree would u be thinking of doing is it BAM? or another one.. I can give you an idea of some of the modules...

I did the common first year, then half IT half International in second then full IT in final year, with additions of
supply chain management
systems development
and a statistics module - of which the lecturer, and the maths centre helped a lot with

Yes I'm thinking of doing business and management. The thing is I haven't done any maths at all for almost 18 months and by the time I get to uni I will have forgotten a lot of the gcse level stuff.
