Do references and bibliographies count towards word count in an essay or report?

Bibliographies normally don't. Some essays include references but others don't. Best to check your course guide.

It dependes on your department's policy. At my University, references include footnotes, but exclude the bibliography.

Beware of abstracts too.. they don't always count. Just had to make up another 150 words of my dissertation when I found out the abstract didn't count.

I am in the process of finishing off my dissertation now. We had to prodice a 1000-word groundwork exercise for hand in during the first semester, but it is important to read all the documentation carefully. Different faculties within the same University can have varying policies as well.
