There can be a difference. Look at the works of Lucan- notoriously difficult to get your head around.

Do you mean whats my thesis topic for the PhD?

Maybe it's more an artifact of my personal approach, but I try to be as precise and as clear as possible when I'm trying to communicate with someone. Sometimes ambiguity is called for however - when you're with a group and you're trying to communicate something specific to one person, while keeping the rest in the dark

Yes! While reading about York I fell into the trap of suddenly finding yourself with thirty various articles about a variety of time periods - I ended up having an extremely shallow whistle-stop tour of the reigns of monarchs from Edward I to Henry VII :/ history, albeit generally pre-Roman history, is always something that I've found interested but never really pursued formally.

Ah, yes. You'll probably be based somewhere else. Although, the Kings Manor library has a lot on medieval architecture, so... I don't know.

I don't mind you asking. I have entered in for both the AHRC and Wolfson scholarships (collectively and imaginatively known as 'AHRC Wolfson'). Currently being decided by committee. Hopefully my ideas and proposal are good enough.

Currently going mad waiting for their answer- almost don't care if its bad news, as I'll be able to get on with other things!

Ah good luck with the scholarship! I'm applying for scholarship as well, haven't submitted any topic proposals for it though, still got lots and lots to do!

Can't disagree with you.

I tend to focus on later medieval history, especially the fourteenth century, and I specialize in retinue prosopography. On that- or at least a similar note- my thesis is a study of the Stafford family from the late fourteenth century to 1403. Its an expansion of my MA thesis, which was a study of Ralph de Stafford, first earl of Stafford.

The interesting thing about it is not only will it increase knowledge of a very important yet enigmatic family in later medieval England, but through the family other areas should be illuminated: For instance, royal policy and patronage, central and local government, law and order in the localities, the hundred years war, Ireland and Aquitaine, as well as a study of the gentry and lower classes. I won't go into the details of all this, of course, but, if I get it right, I can do all these things which will in consequence provide the basis of a number of articles after the thesis is completed.

And, yes! History is interesting!

You have any ideas for a thesis? Does your course even have a thesis/dissertation to it?

Thank you for the luck! Good luck with yours!
Well I didn't get the studentship. Hazaar!

What can you do?

Now to work out what to do with my life...

I wish everyone else better luck with their funding applications.

Aw :frown: so sorry to hear that..

You might want to look up for funding from the university/ the department. It's on their website, mostly only cover around 50% of tuition fees, but it's worth trying

Nice to hear these exciting ideas!

My dissertation thesis is current in its formative stages, but currently it involves applying post-colonial theory to Beowulf, in order to develop our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon migratory period - primarily researching the ideologies and attitudes that led the Anglo-Saxons to impose a cultural apartheid over native Britons and the effect this had on the diffusion of Anglo-Saxon culture amongst the British population.

Sounds like utter *******s when I imagine someone else reading it, but it makes sense in my head - honest!
Hi all.

Any English applicants? I have accepted an offer to study on the MA Modern and Contemporary Literature. Luckily have the savings to cover the funds so I'm not depending on funding applications.

I'm from Yarm so shall be travelling in on the train, and I'm doing my current degree in English Literature and History at Northumbria.

Would be good to hear from anyone also going to be on the course.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

Unfortunately, the other scholarships won't get me enough. But, as you say, might be worth trying in any event.

I'm actually half hoping that one of the people they awarded it too will turn it down... very unlikely...

Not going to happen, is it?!

And sorry for the delay in my reply.

No need to worry. Makes sense to me and very interesting, too! Such a shame I won't be going to York. I would have relished an in-depth discussion on the subject.

Would it make sense- given the extraordinary lack of source material on the subject, as well as the period in general- to draw in what we know of the Scandinavian population living in England and English attitudes towards them? As I recall, atrocities were committed by the English to Scandinavian colonies during the time of Ethelred Unred (???), which suggests to me that they were segregated from the English and there was antagonism between the two ethnic groups. Is stuff like that applicable?

I have to admit, I'm not sure if what I'm on about makes sense. I'm a late Medieval specialist. So, sorry if I sound like a moron.

Unlikely things happen in this world  so you might still want to keep your hopes up

Hi, I applied to Wentworth already, I guess being a postgrad-only college it'll be more suitable. And I reckon after a year in York, we'll get our heads around everything and finding some place to live in the city won't be a big fuss if we do get 'stranded' before the course ends

Hi, I applied for MSc in Cyber Security at York as an overseas student. I received an unconditional offer last week!. I am considering to accept the offer but I also applied for MSc in Computer Security at Birmingham and I want to wait for their response prior to make a proper decision.

Kind regards!
