oh man, this really sucks to hear as i've accepted my place and declined my offers at LCA and manchester school of art. :/ i'm hoping that because you went in the first year it opened, they will have seen what didn't worked and how the course could be improved for next year? but i guess the obvious thing to do would be to decrease the numbers which they haven't done. reading this i feel like an idiot for not accepting manchester, i had SUCH a good vibe for the course but the location scared me off as it's very far from home. my current art teachers are useless and i did my portfolio on my own this time round as well, so at least i'm used to that. thanks for the heads up.

do you know if the course was better for communication arts specialisms? one of the reasons i chose CCW is that i really want to do an illustration degree at camberwell.

it really really really depends on the specialism. Seriously, don't worry. I know they're making a few changes anyway regarding the diagnostic part 1. I think you choose two out of the three art, communication and design so you only try two because most people only really have an interest in two areas. The problem she explained about how she had little work from this part will change because you'll be taught by the actual tutors of these pathways, whereas each group had 3 tutors from each pathway and they all taught the areas they didn't even teach, which was stupid.
It won't be like that next year.
Hope that made sense...

Ok dont panic i think there are ways to get good things from this corse. 1. live as close as you can to the campus, the bernard meyers halls are very nice and close and because you dont get your own space, if you have to carry heaps of stuff in every day from a long way its very hard to get good work out of it.
2. Find the communications tutors early. Get your tutors to introduce you to them and be very pushy about getting time with them.
3. If your sure about communications then dont take no for an answer, from the start on each project try to make communications outcomes; dont let the other tutors convince you not to.
4. I think the communications classes are smaller than fashion so it should be a better experience than mine.

Hope that helps!

thanks so much for the advice! i've applied to live in the new halls on campus so i'll be mega close, like a 30 second walk. it's good to know the classes are a bit smaller, i guess that varies from year to year though!

I have just finished foundation at CCW, I would HIGHLY recommend it over the rest of the UAL foundations. To be quite honest it dosnt matter where you do your foundation, its up to the individual to do the work. CCW got the highest score in the ofsted briefing this year. I specilised in Fashion and the tutors that we had were very supportive and helped students that wanted to work and students that allowed themselves to experiment. I have been offered a place from st martins for womenswear, and most people from our specilism got places there for textiles, knitwear and print while others got offers from kingston, westminster, London college of Fashion, and other reputable courses throughout the UK. To be quite honest it was the people who didnt work and the people who moaned throughout the course didnt get in anywhere. The course is very independent and you have to work very hard but the outcome is very rewarding. I had the best year of my life, the students are very friendly and reliable.

If I was to compare CSM with CCW I would say that CCW allow students to find their own way of working and encourage their students to be individual.
I wish people who are starting CCW foundation the best of luck and you will have an enjoyable experience like I had, and dont listen to people who moan obout it, because at the end of the day its up to you to do the work...
hey does anyone know what the facilities for sound art are like? i hear you can rent equipment but do any of the 3 colleges have an audio booth or something?
SO confused. i need an honest opinion of both CCW and leeds foundation courses. i cant decide. is it worth living at home just outside of london, saving money for art supplies and going to CCW?

Hey,

No worries, I was feeling the same thing as you last year.

Basically the way it works is the first thing you do is a 6 week rotation of all the different disciplines you can specialise in (Fine art, graphics, illustration, 3D, fashion and moving image[although you cannot specialise in moving image, it comes under graphics and illustration]). Then there is a 3 day drawing trip, over which you make your decision over where to specialise. So you can work on 3D about 7 weeks in. Keep in mind that the course starts at the very beginning of September, so this is an extra 6 weeks compared to most degree courses. You break up late for Christmas, on the 15th or so, and come back early, on the 3rd of Jan. There isn't a reading week or half term or any break at all in the first term.

Because of the tight turn around for uni portfolios, you're expected to work extremely hard. You'll be in 5 days a week, sometimes late into the night. I personally didn't mind this, as everyone was in the same boat, and was working just as hard. I can honestly say that if you put in the work, and listen to the tutors, you will get onto the course you want. They're fantastic, and I wouldn't worry about the time constraints as long as you're willing to work.

Ah, almost forgot to say - A lot of the work I did in my rotation (everything apart from fine art which I didn't document...) went into my portfolio for application to Graphics. Tutors across all creative disciplines want to see potential, and a creative mind, as much as subject-specific work.

My account is naturally pretty one-sided, but I cannot recommend Kingston highly enough. I never like to tell someone to definitely go somewhere, but it sounds like the only issue is the rotation thing at the beginning - if this is the case then I would take the offer!

Hi, do foundation students get any studio space at kingston?
Also, in terms of degree courses what kind of places are people on your course going, do many stay at kingston?
Sorry one more question, do many of the foundation students live in halls??
Thanks

Hello!

Yes, everybody gets studio space. Once you specialise, each discipline has its own studio. You don't have an allocated space (apart from possibly in fine art you stay in the same spot), but there is more than enough, even when everyone is in (which is pretty much everyday.)

Out of the 30 of us who specialised in graphics, 22 are staying. The others are going to goldsmiths, glasgow, chelsea, northumbria and a couple of other places.
On illustration, 11 or 12 are staying on, with the rest going to places like brighton, glasgow etc. I don't know about exact figures for the other disciplines, but it's not as high as in graphics.

(at a guess) About half of the people on the course stay in halls.

Hope that helps

Its ok, I just wanted to clarify that you dont have to go to CSM foundation, CCW is even better, at the final year shows CCW students work is much more individual and experimental in comparision to CSM. If you are thinking about doing fashion, dont feel disadvantaged just because its not a fashion foundation, to be honest I had the same feeling, but I must say my tutor on the fashion specilism was very honest and pushed us all to think beyond fashion and find our own individual design visions. I hope you have an amazing year like I have had..CCW!!!
Ahh I still don't know where to go! Is CCW better than MMU?

Same  I was suprised that it doesn't take too much effort, just 3 spaces on the escalator. I'm coming from Watford so I probably won't see you on the commute, but I have a few line changes until they make the line direct in December.
