Economics or Engineering?

I'm going to keep this brief as I need to go soon.

Im in year 12 and I'm currently studying Maths, FM, Economics, Chemistry and Physics.

I've had massive problems trying to decide what on earth I want to do with my life.

But, I think for now, I have it narrowed down to a few options. Here they are:

I can take Economics/Maths at Uni and go into Banking/finance or anything else i don't know of yet. I feel this would pay well but I don't think it would be fun or creative, am I wrong?

For engineering, I don't think the pay would be as good as the other option, but I'd love the chance to design Cars or Aeroplanes. I feel I could be more creative here.

Give me your opinions.

for me it's economics because i'm interested in it, and i love it at A level (and loved it at GCSE) however, if i had the interest or grades to do engineering i definatley would. Seems to be very popular!

It is also rather common for Engineering Students to go in to Banking and Finance after their studies anyway*, so you'll be keeping both your options open by taking an Engineering Degree.

*So much so that the Bank of America often come into my university to advertise graduate schemes

Honestly, I like them all.
I think Core maths is a bit plain sometimes. I think Physics and Economics are both very interesting. I also like Chemistry, wouldn't say its as absorbed as the other two.

I'd say Engineering has better prospects, with so many developing countries, especially in Africa, there's huge potential to earn buckets in the coming years. That said, Economics will lead you to banking, it's very standard, engineers have more of a 'wow' factor imo, and a much better reputation if money isn't the sole reason you're living :tongue:

I didn't realise that economics graduates are still unemployed :confused:

I'm doing exactly those subjects at A-Level but dropped Chemistry after AS (hated it - tedious, difficult and just eww).
I've applied for Economics at uni. I was torn between Maths, and Economics - I didn't want to do a joint honours - so in the end, I followed my heart and went for economics. :love:

Tbh, with an Economics degree, you can be up against Maths, Physics, Business and even humanitites grads, providing they can do some maths. With Engineering, you don't have as much competition to get a job...perhaps physics grads can challenge in areas, but if they want a BEng or an MEng, then it's just you and other engineering grads :tongue:

It's far more specialist.

Well isn't it pretty obvious/sensible that most people that do engineering at uni wants to become some kind of engineer? That's the only reason I can think of for why someone would want to do engineering for 3/4 years. Remember that it's more practical than economics which is also practical but much more theoretical.
