What's he doing to the North Africans? I thought he was going to make France the first country in western Europe to recognise the state of Palestine, hardly a right wing nutjob.

The past month he's been attempting to appeal to anti-immigration nut jobs.

Was wondering who would be the first to hit me with that

Chirac was not left-leaning socially but he was a member of the Communist Party and enjoyed relations with the Soviet union.

I was not expecting that, I thought you were going to talk about Josepin or something.

But his policies were still right-wing and I heard he joined it when he was younger not during his time as president

Haha, his party, the French "Socialist" party gives me the giggles every time,
this guy is essentially pre-election Cameron, the whole political spectrum of france is much further right (not by US standards) and what they would concider "slightly authoritarian, and center left", we would concider to be moderate right and near fascist, kind of like what backbench tories think in private.

What are the implications of this?

The turkeys haven't just voted for Christmas, they've thrown in 5 years of battery farm hell followed by halal slaughter.

Hollande basically promised all the things that have given Greece ruination and Spain 25% unemployment, and then on top of that said "By the way, it's socialism, too!". A system which has never, ever, ever, anywhere, ever, brought anything except financial disaster and misery for the people suffering under it.

They say "The trouble with Socialism is that, at some point, you run out of other people's money".

If I could happily sit back and watch France implode in an isolated bubble of it's own stupidity, that'd be fine. Everyone enjoys a bit of Schadenfreude, right? But they're propped up by the equally corrupt and stupid EU who will just keep on and on handing over other people's money.

France is certainly going to get what it voted for, and it fully deserves it, too.

The implications for France are terrible, but their own doing.

The implications for the rest of Europe and its neighbours like the UK are pretty gloomy. Watch those markets crash...

Is it true that the highest earners have to pay 75% tax? If so, surely most of them will leave the country?

He wants to re-negotiate the Fiscal Compat.

I think he wants a stimulus package as an add on rather than renegotiate it completely.

Certainly in Ireland where our government is campaigning for a Yes vote for the Fiscal Compact, the Taoiseach (PM) came out and (sorta) backed Hollande's growth policy even though Kenny is no relation of a Socialist.

aye, but he's cutting corporation tax hoping to encourage business owners to legally avoid tax by investing profits back within the companies.

It doesn't work in the way you think, this post explains quite well:

Erm, isn't this how income tax works everywhere? Why wouldn't he think it works like that?

Name one "socialist" position of the party and I will eat my webcam.

And I'm glad you've recognised they aren't socially liberal. Hollande really did pander to the anti-Sarkozy crowd in the Front Party.

In practice none of it will happen. There are always loopholes to be found. People may limit their salaries to just 1 million euro limit just before the higher rate tax apply and have the company pay benefits in kind such as private schools, gym etc

Looks like the Eurozone break up will happen even faster then.
As much as I dislike Hollande, I got to hand it to the French for having a turnout of 80% at the ballot boxes. At least they value democracy

Unfortunately (or fortunately ) I was a baby under Mitterrand.

Remember under Chirac's first term you had Jospin and his government until 2002 who were pretty much socialist. Chirac was just the figurehead like our queen at the time.
