Why isn't it called Camford?

Sounds better.

It also sounds a *little* less intimidating.

No it doesn't.

It doesn't sound better. Oxbridge sounds more..distinctive, I guess. Camford just sounds a bit generic (to me, anyway).

When referring to the two ambiguously, Oxbridge is the one you go to and Camford is the other place. Just convention. And I believe Oxbridge was coined first.

It was coined in reference to the education of politicians, mainly Tories, the majority of whom had been to Oxford to study PPE (How times change eh? ) and so the Ox was placed first.

Camford sounds common. Of course Cambridge and Oxford wouldn't want to be associated with that.

:frown:
1) Oxbridge sounds cooler
2) Oxford was founded before Cambridge, and Cambridge was founded by scholars who left Oxford.
3) Oxbridge sounds cooler

Cool like a camera, reliable like a ford?
The prefix of 'ox' sounds better and more dominant.
