So I was reading about the available courses at Cambridge, and it says something about A Level Mathematics or equivalent being recommended for the Mathematical Logic paper in the third year.

Is it required? Could you do like extra study in years one and two to be able to do it? Or can you do it without A Level Maths, or would you just fail spectacularly? How is the Philosophical Logic paper different?

By the time you get to third year, you'd probably know from two years of logic whether you wanted to and were able to do the math logic paper. There's certainly nothing on it that you'd know or learn from A level maths (including further) - I imagine they say that because you would need to be reasonably good at maths to take the paper, because it involves doing technical mathsy stuff, unlike phil logic, which actually includes loads of philosophy of maths itself. And can get slightly technical. But unlike math logic, you won't get a whole question that says 'outline a proof of this'.

You certainly wouldn't have to learn any A level maths if you ended up wanting to do it, anyway. If you could have taken A level maths you'd be fine. It's a long way ahead anyway. You can be perfectly interested in maths and the philosophy of maths and still have no desire to do that paper, believe me.

Thanks! Okay, well I like to think I'm fairly good at maths  Still, I'm just starting to teach myself C1 all the same...

Anyways, I've finally returned to my personal statement, and I'm regretting writing every word. Yay! I hope they don't mention any of the opinions I had in it, any of the books I mentioned in it or anything. FEAR. I would much rather have interviews that didn't mention my PS or essay at all. :frown:

First: YAAAY CLARE!!
It is by far the most amazingest college in the whole wide world.

Second: There are 3 in 1st year, 1 in 2nd year and 2 in 3rd year. Things change each year!

hehe thanks! Aww that's lonely being the only one though :frown:
And I know, Clare pools lots of people as well  Was only joking really :p:
But Clare is so lovely  I actually can't wait to stay overnight there now

I know, same!

I'm just going through my PS thinking, "yeah you know, I don't really mean that."

Or, "yeah that's a really vacuous statement which has no significance."

Or the majority of the time I'm thinking, "DO NOT ASK ME ANYTHING ABOUT THIS!"

Oh well...I'm actually looking forward to them asking what I have to say about the books I've read, not about random philosophical problems -- the thing that tends to happen is that when someone asks for my opinion I'll always say the first thing that comes to my head, rather than make any deliberation on the matter lol.

Do you know what your interviewer specialises in, in terms of philosophy?

Lmao I know!! I'm cringing as I read through my PS... most of the 'opinions' I don't actually feel, and are really hard to back up.. oh dear :frown: :p:

And yeah I applied to Clare as I would be more likely to be asked about the Philosophy of Biology, which I think sounds really interesting
(ssshh though, we're not allowed to say the name of our interviewers!!)
*waves*; sorry I keep intruding here. I know it's not my course or uni really, but talking about studying philosophy makes me feel all warm and fuzzy whereas the PPE thread just makes me shiver.

I think I'd rather be asked something direct and random, which I could at least think my way through. Rather than - what are you interested in? Which would just leave me like er... intentionality? Humm errr...

I know!! My interviewer at Clare is like an expert in it, so that's gonna be my answer to the "so why did you apply to Clare?"
I've tried to read some articles on it though but they're like.. impossible..

I think the philosophy of biology is under the 'philosophy of science' module in the second year (but don't quote me on that)
Yes -- you can study elements of the philosophy of biology as part of the philosophy of science module in part Ib.
Regarding personal statements: it's really no problem at all to say in the interview that you've actually changed your opinion on something. Just so long as you have reasons for things, that's the key.

Nina: Could you send me the metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, essay and HMP please? Thankyou -- I owe you a drink next time I'm in Cambridge. Email is in a PM to you.

ROFL! Exactly!!!

I don't even know who my interviewers are yet (I should get the letter by tomorrow). The Phil DoS for Downing is some guy called Tomalin though, and I think he did English and now specialises in philosophy of language. Does Cambridge even do Philosophy of Language? :s-smilie: [Edit: it probably does, yeah...]

mod edit: removing info from quote. (and yes we do philosophy of language)
I'll take a drink happily coldfish!

Yes we do Philosophy of Language, mainly in second year, and yes you do Philosophy of Biology in PhilSci in 2nd year.
Reply 491
Also there's a whole paper on Wittgenstein in third year, a great deal of which is philosophy of language (as is quite a lot of 3rd year phil logic, come to think of it). You won't run short of that.
Yeah pretty much. Although wanderer knows more about it than I do.
Reply 493
Well, yes, it's mainly meaning, but that's fairly broad itself. Truth is probably the biggest other single word, but the two aren't entirely unrelated. As in they're massively interrelated. I suppose philosophy of logic is sort of part of the philosophy of language, or at least quite closely connected to it. But meaning and truth pop up there too.
Hi there, fellow contemplative souls! I was just wondering whether any of you know if we all have the philosophy test on the same day? I applied to St John's and got told informally via email that I would be offered an interview on the 10th, staying overnight the 9th. They also told me that they would email me the official times in the coming days... only they haven't still. And my dad's getting really antsy about it because we're in Japan and we have to book a flight from here, then figure out whether I have to rejoin my family in Laos or Thailand...

Anybody got a clue?
Reply 495
Mine's on the evening of the 9th as well, although Curtis has his on the 10th (same college as me- Clare) so things don't seem to be very consistent...
I thought that the test differed from college to college as well but I can't understand Clare's thinking if they've scheduled two applicants from the same college to sit it on different days... very strange.

I'm sorry I couldn't be much help but I agree with nemnem, probably better to come up on the 8th and leave plenty of time!
nemnem
Wow, short notice for flight booking!!
Anyways, I'm pretty sure we don't all have our tests on the same day. Someone earlier in the thread (elwoodc?) maybe said she has her test on the 10th and I have mine on the 9th. As far as I know it's arranged within the colleges. Oh, from what I understand, the tests at each college are different (if only slightly) so it would be unlikely if we were all going to be doing different tests at the same time! Oh and also my test is taking place in the college I'm applying to.... so yeah all the evidence seems to suggest we aren't doing the test at the same time lol. If you're booking flights I would guess it would be best to fly in on the 8th and stay in a hotel somewhere; if you weren't going to already...
Hope that helped

Yeah, I guess that's what I'll end up doing. I do wish they would send me an official email, though; the whole interview business is terrifying enough as it is! :s-smilie: Anyways, thank you nemnem and elwoodc!

By the way, do you guys know something about the test? I remember reading some sample questions online somewhere, but there weren't any sample answers, so I'm still a little confused. Do you answer the open-ended questions in essay form, or with a short paragraph? And how long should an essay be, generally? I just feel that I have very little information on the subject, and I don't know anybody who has ever applied to any university in England, let alone to Cambridge.

On pages 20 to 22 a few of us agreed on what the answers to the logic questions must be, and then discussed what we'd say on the essay ones, so you could look back through that

According to the practice paper on the internet, we have 20 minutes to do 18 logic questions, and then 40 minutes to write an essay on one of the questions. I'm assuming they'll be looking for a properally structured essay, although it varies from person to person how long it has to be.
In my letter it doesn't say much about the test apart from "Please note that the test will not require any specialist knowledge or advance preparation, but is intended rather to give you a chance to show your basic potential in the subject"
So don't worry about it really

Is everyone staying over the night before then?

Is anyone else staying over the night before who lives in London too? :P

My parents are taking me at like 7am on the actual day (the 10th) for the interview, but I don't know if I should be doing that because I'll be knackered!

Yeah I'm staying over in the college from 9th (test in evening) til 10th (interviews)
And I live about half an hour outside of London..

Stay over in Cambridge it'll be fun! And you won't have to be all rushed and tired and paniced in the morning of your interview travelling to Cambridge
