My defense is in need of a minor overhaul, Ferdinand is nearly 35 and Rodwell isn't stepping up, Evra is 32 so I need a left back to provide competition for him and Mattock, and I need competition to push Rafinha to new heights. Any tips are gratefully received.
No I mean will the game still install and work ok even though it is already installed on another PC. You have to put in the serial number when you're installing so I don't know if it'll stop me or what.

Should work without a problem. I have installed it on three different computers. If you installed via steam you can even install the game without the disc as it downloads from their site once you log in using your username, if you have one. I presume you still have the serial number so I can't foresee any problems.

The AI is doing my head in. Discovered a great little Irish centre mid available for less than a mil. I bid 500k for him and they demand 1.5m but they're stalling over a 140k offer from some french team.

It only gets harder from here mate. IMO I found it difficult to bring in talented players because none of them want to play for me. Signing young cheap players and selling them on became my main source of income because of lack of funds in expanding the stadium. I did once get enough money to expand but the local council blocked planning permission

Man, I'm York City and I just faced Leeds in the League Cup. Was down 4-1 with about 30 mins to go so I just went all gung-ho. Pulled it back 4-4 (wasn't even expecting it, tbh) and then THEY SCORE IN EXTRA TIME!

LOL I used to be obsessed with FM, but got bored after a while

I played the first one (2005 I think) to death and it was amazing, but after that I found it hard to get into it again.

I remember I won everything with Real Betis once, that was amazing!

I won the Scottish Cup once with Clyde in Championship Manager 03/04, pre split. Those were the days...

its the little things you treasure. I remember winning the FA cup with Derby in the Championship on FM08. Beat Chelsea and Man Utd on the way and beat Portsmouth in the final. Happy days.

Yeh although I have gained promotion each year, this is gonna be damn hard .
The first year was a doddle, BSP eaqually so, and although I did promote from league two, it was really hard and I neck and necked with Millwall the whole season. The fact that I beat them 1-0 away at the end of season was what confirmed me the top spot

Anyone with some good players to get for league one?
I'm pretty sure I will need to strengthen a bit for this year....

Raid the scottish leagues, players usually do well in league one and then, if you like, you can sell them on, usually at a profit. I can't remember any names but each game is different. My advice would be to use the loan system and try to get in some PL reserves/youngsters, thats what I did in the last game I played like yours. I also found giving trials to free players useful, but also time consuming. Good luck with the renewal....

As for Messi, he's a clever player. Let him do what he wants. Free role, yes, creative freedom at max. Run with ball always, forward runs often, long shots often, through balls often. Never hold up the ball. The only one I'd not put at max is cross the ball. Messi isn't a brilliant crosser, and his preferred moves should have "gets into opposition area". Put crossing as rarely, and Messi will cut into the box (since he's on the right wing he'll be on his favoured left foot when he cuts in) and he'll destroy defences.

I've tended to play 4-4-2 with Messi + Zhirkov more across the middle than further upfield.
Mandanda has been awesome for me, so he's my number 1 keeper and Sakho doesnt do brilliantly at being an attacking fullback so I go with Insua/my other LB.
Milskyvi is an awesome striker! my top goalscorer at the moment!

With my team talk reports. I seem to get 'has no effect' or 'wasnt listening'

Why don't you try playing a take on the diamond midfield, though with only one striker so as to allow Messi the creativity he needs to thrive. Play Messi just behind the front man with Zhirkov on the left with whoever on the right, set your passing to mixed with width set at normal and that should unleash the beast that is Messi. Play Mileskyvi as the only striker, he does rather well in that role anyway. I've yet to win much whilst playing with two strikers, you really do need a good DM to thrive in the PL in FM.

As for the team talks, your squad's personality does have an effect. Don't worry so much about it. Give them hell for wins that should've been more comfortable, like 1-0 at home to Hull or whoever.

My first team, with two named for each position:

Gk: Afinkeev/Carrasso
Rb: Rafinha/Gosling
Cb: Ferdinand/Rodwell, Evans/Vidic
Lb: Evra/Mattock
Dm: Hargreaves/Busquets
Cm: Fletcher/Sahin, Anderson/Campana
Amr: Messi/Nani
Aml: Ronaldo/Mata
St: Rooney/Morimoto

I also have Ljajic for either wing, and a couple of hotshot young strikers to play if needs be. At the moment I have my scouts out searching for the best young players to steal from Europe and am awaiting a feeder club so that I can poach young South Americans. I may aswell play the game as near to real life as possible.

Playing FM07, into 08/09 season with Arsenal.
Won the C.League & Prem in the 06/07 and then Prem in 07/08.
Arsenal just got taken over by some consortium and now the club is massively rich.

Huntelaar
Gourcuff
Rosicky Walcott
Fabregas Cana
Bale Y.Kaboul Gallas Vanden Borre
Boruc
Henry picked up a 5 month injury, so Huntelaar's being bought during the January transfer.
Younis Kaboul is an awesome defender!

I reinstalled my FM having rebooted my whole PC and now it's working so slow. Actually, it doesn't even work. It's loads up really slowly, the pages dragging along, and then when you get to the home menu it sort of freezes when the annoying Steam thing comes up. Any idea why this could be? Surely if I rebooted it should be quicker now?

I've just installed that DirectX thing from the Microsoft Website too because I was getting that graphics system memory error.

I doing really ****. Every club that signs me is quite ****, and understandably. I tweak the tactics, try to get it into a beautiful attacking football mode, then the team does really well for a few games, and then starts to lose. Continuously. I've lost the last 4-5 games 1-0 or 2-1. I'm getting really depressed by this. What am I doing wrong?

Maybe because the teams are **** you are tweaking the tactics to something that they can't sustain due to the lack of ability. Choose tactics to suit your squad and then when the opportunity arises sign players to suit the way you want to play.

That makes a lot of sense, but how do you mean, more suitable? As in a slower pace? Less creative freedom?

Definitely. Lower league teams play lower football. When I took Stalybridge in BSN, we played a slower, short game, noone was given a free role and very few were given creative freedom.
Now that I have them in the league 1, we play a fast direct game, two amazingly fast central midfielders playing with heavy forward runs, the most creative and best decision maker given a free role and and a lot of creative freedom... etc...

You gotta let your players do whats comfortable to them.
No point having them all closing down a lot if they have no stamina etc...
