Default Re: Should newspapers have to report on daily business in Parliament?

wont work, newspapers already provide some bits, bbc parlinent fills in the rest.

you'll only end up with the sun/star/whatever other trash reporting silly things about parliament (tory MP picks nose, labour MP has a boner during PMQ's etc. etc.)

what is there really to gain from this anyway?

Not really, you can't force people what to read or newspapers what to write. I don't see anything wrong with the amount of politics coverage we have anyway.

Good idea - but only if Parliament can actually do something more substantial than they currently do.
- Get rid of the whips
- Separate executive from legislature
- Give ALL parliamentary select committees powers of summons
- Give Parliament the power of veto over public appointments

Then Parliament would have stuff worth reporting to the outside world rather than to parliamentary geeks like me.

It's a good idea, but not many people would care. The bigger problem is misrepresentation and distortion and omission of important facts, or media circuses of private citizens who just want to be left alone - "public interest" can be a euphemism for exploitable, inappropriate nosiness. However, I don't trust the current government to reform such without creating the rules in its favour.
