I need an anlysis for these two lines of the next poem:

When the stars threw down their spears
And water’d heaven with their tears:


These two lines only

I need their meaning please

they are from The Tyger by Willaim Blake:

“The Tyger”
Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Unfortunately I've never studied this poem before. But I did grasp the main concepts of the poem (with the help of SparkNotes, wahey!) and it's clear that there is the essence of God and divinity, and the words 'stars' and 'heaven' within this semantic field are probably just there to perpetuate that idea. I'm not sure what the two lines specifically mean, but if you're studying this for an exam I would focus on the more pertinent quotes and not worry too much about 'translating' the other parts of the poem.

Apologies that I couldn't really give you a straight answer, but I saw that no one had replied so this might bump the thread. I would recommend asking your tutor about it.

The Tiger is indeed a metephor for God, the whole poem in itself is really just a reference to Paradise Lost describing the scene where the rouge angels where cast down into hell. I know he was trying to indicate that The Tiger was God, but somewhere in the poem i think he hints at it being The Devil.

Hmm might have to disagree there.. the Tyger is not God. Note the line "did he who made the Lamb make thee?". This is a reference to the Tyger being a creation of God, not God himself. It provides a contrast of sorts, the fierce Tyger with the docile and meek lamb. I agree its possible that the part about the spears could possibly be about the war in heaven. But all in all it's not a very pertinent part of the poem. And there could be millions of ways to interprete that line. ^^

Well what does it sound like to you?
Think about the words that have been used in the poem. Look at the context and general feel of it. Some argue it is about revoloution, others a simple ode to God.
