What was it like? I might be looking for a part-time job next year when I turn 16.
It was alright, I made a few mates, little bit greasy after work, and some of the customers treat you like you're stupid - even though 90% of the time you're cleverer! To be honest, I only left because the management was poor which could be differet. They vary greatly though, because Mcdonalds are mostly franchises... Ooo and lots of good benefits, I got £20 off of my phone when i was there, discount tickets to Thorpe park, stuff like that.
if I'm honest though, apply to supermarkets first, you get a bit more respect from customers though pay varies, but you can usually have a bit more faith in the managers to support you - more then I can say for McD's.
I'm finding it quite tough, I'm on an undesired gap year so I'm incredibly flexible in days and hours I can work, but nowhere cares However, I did hand a CV in at L'Occitane yesterday, and I got a call back 2 hours later to organise an interview! It's an incredibly small store though so they're probably only recruiting 2 xmas temps at the most.. and I'm a nervous reck in interviews.. But I want this job so badly! Weep.
I'm 18 (19 soon), on a gap year, and never done any paid work before. I keep saying how flexible I am. I've had experience, perhaps, but it's not the same - I've just always been in full-time education... hoping to start a course at uni next year though (if I get in anywhere). I must have applied to about 10 different places, which I guess isn't that much - but I was picky! I made sure I handed in a CV and covering letter, as well as an application form to places that required it (this is all for Xmas temp jobs) and they all said they'd get back to me. I really needed the money for if I want to travel, and just experience. But they were all so snooty! And some places where I just politely asked if there was anything were just like "No." I mean, how am I supposed to get experience - we all need to start somewhere!

Same here! Undesired, that is. Funny thing is, I applied at L'Occitane too!
But I don't think I was all that impressive - they haven't gotten back to me, anyway. And I really am flexible in hours, just argh!

It's a pain, I thought being so flexible would be such an advantage, but apparently not. Just got to keep trying, but I find it so hard to keep up the motivation after getting rejected so many times! You've just got to big yourself up as much as possible, my work experience is a couple of months of waitressing and the work experience I did in high school for a week.. I haven't worked in 2 years, but I never really considered it because I was more concerned with my A levels. But now it's just proving so hard to find anything, because I've been more devoted to my education than worrying about having a job, and was fortunate that my parents were happy with that, but now it's biting me on the bum.
My local L'Occitane seem to be handing out interviews like sweeties though, so I'm not quite sure how optimistic to be about it!

Ditto! And there'll be a clear lack of work on my CV, unless I do some at uni - but again, they'll probably expect me to have had some already. Plus, I can't just sit around this whole year... my entire plan was to find some work, get experience/learn new skills, as well as save up money for potential travelling. THEN go to uni. I can't do nothing till then! I guess I can look for work experience because it's better than nothing, but it's still not money. I'm living at home, too - and keep having to hear from them how I should be out of the house...!
Yeah, the worst thing is that the places I've contacted haven't even rejected me - I've just heard nothing! Surely I should have done by now.
Thank you very much!! I'm thinking of joining a temping agency, Office Angels, as all the people I know who joined there seemed to be successful. But seeing as it's office work, it'll be 9 to 5 most probably, so that plus my saturday job.. I dunno if that'll be too much to handle for my first working experiences!
