Default Glasgow Uni - Getting into second year

Is there a specific amount of credits you have to obtain before you are allowed to enter second year at Glasgow Uni?

I recently changed my third subject to Russian and I just can't do it - but it's too late to change anything now. If the worst came to the worst and I just didn't attend ANY lectures or tutorials in Russian and received a credit refused... would I be denied entry to second year? I will still attend every lecture & tutorial for my main two subjects, though.

I want to take my first two choices, French and Spanish, to Joint Honours - I don't give a damn about the third. But I'm scared that if I totally neglect Russian (my third subject), it will affect my chances of advancing in my first two choices.

You need to have 120 credits in order to be allowed to progress in to second year. So if you get a credit refused then you won't be able to progress. Is there no way you can change your course? You might be able to change in the second semester.

I'm not sure how the regulations look now, or how they vary from faculty to faculty, but I believe you will be allowed into second year with 80 credits at grade D- have a check on the website to see each faculty's requirements for progress. Most however say you need 240 credits with at least 220 at D and a certain score (usually C or better) in your intended honours classes. Therefore, you'd have a very tough second year if you went in on the minimum grades, 160 credits needing a decent average across them isn't likely if you're only scraping the minimum now.

You don't need the full 120 credits. I would strongly suggest you go to your advisor of studies.
If you feel you can scrape a pass keep at it. If there is really no way at all it may be best to drop the course and do a 20 credit course after December. There are several across the faculties that you can do without having attended a module on that subject in the first half of the year. 'exploring the cosmos' was amoung the more popular for situations like this when I was in first year (2002).
You're probably best looking at the course catalogue if you want to go down this route.
