This is sort of true I guess. I live in Ranmoor and my building is pretty much empty-only 14 people in it when we have 70 bedrooms but I sort of like it this way. I've got to know a few people in other flats better than I think I would have if ours had been full. There's also only 4 girls in the building, with 10 guys but they don't share at all. Don't know if this is true for all of Ranmoor. On the other hand the building next door to ours has 60 people, so some are filled up. Ours also means loads of extra space in the kitchen, and hardly any mess, plus en-suites
I like it because it's quiet and I personally prefer the Ridge to the Edge unless i'm properly going out, it's much more relaxed and friendly.

Although this weekend all of my flatmates (only 3 girls) have gone home so i'm entirely on my own and incredibly bored

I've just started my first year of Geography and Politics at Sheffield, it's amazing. There's a group of 6 of us doing it this year, which is good because we're all now pretty good friends and we tend to do all our work together and whatnot.

All the league tables will tell you how good the Politics department here is, however, what really makes it so outstanding is how good the lecturers are at what they do. Geography's the same, although be aware there's a module called Statistical Data Analysis that's every bit as fun as it sounds

But if you've got any specific questions about GeogPol, feel free to ask

Cheers, sounds awesome. So do you mean that only 6 people are taking that course in your whole year? Also, as it's a combined degree, is that the same amount of work as just doing a normal degree in one subject?

152 does suck! Do you find though that there arent many "proper" Geography modules in the first year? Just 112 and that can get tedious some times. Wait it out though till the second year when Geography actually starts

Yeah, we've got the same workload as everyone else. In the first year, people doing single honours do unrestricted modules to fill up their 120 credits (us GeogPols only get 10 credits...I chose a module called Japanese Politics, it's actually really interesting) and we do all of what the Geography and Politics BAs do. In Politics though, we get a choice of 1 between 3 20 credit modules: History of Western Political Thought, the Politics of Globalisation and British Politics. I'm doing British Politics because the timetable people put a core Geography lecture in the same lecture slot as Globalisation (appeasing 200 people as opposed to 6 people makes more sense I guess though), but I'm not starting on that until next semester, looks promising enough though!

And yep, just us 6! Don't worry though, they'll be in all your lectures, so you've always got someone to walk up with and someone to sit with!

Pretty much, yeah! 112 seems to be more Sociology than Geography right now, and 152, well....

163's ok, although that's pretty self-led anyway so it eventually becomes what you make of it. Naturally, we've decided Geopolitics and International Affairs as our topic.

152 was bearable with Harvey Armstrong and his many stories, but now he's retired and been replaced with Edward Hanna! Strongly considering having my Wednesdays off nowadays and getting what I need off MOLE!

I thought the one he covered while Harvey was away to be ok. And he printed everything off for you I'm doing Geography of Elections for my 163 and find it quite interesting but there's loads of data to try and understand (i just highlight it though ) Most worrying thing is that Harvey was the convenor for the main Human module next semester, that Region, Nation and World one so not sure who's going to be doing that one

112 is the worst module I have ever taken, in fact even some of the human lecturers think its retarded.

152 is a strange module, its the easiest stats you will ever have to do, but it has the lowest marks of any module, there are a lot of people who just switch off as soon as the lecturer mentions maths, but if you have at least 2 mathematical braincells you'll find it a breeze, I got my highest mark ever on that module.

They actually want to make it more difficult as it doesn't really cover the amount of stats you need for your dissertation, but people are so crap at it they can't. At the end of the day, "if you can't pass 152 with 50% you can't be clever enough to do a geography degree" (a quote from a lecturer who will remain anonymous).

Also Ed Hanna is a genius, you will come to realise this, his knowledge knows no bounds.
