Default Splitting up a return ticket.

Hey guys

I'm planning on visiting my dad, however my mum lives in the city that I have to change train at to get to dad.

On the return journy can I stay at mums overnight and then use the same ticket to get the rest of the way back to university? (if I buy a 30 day return, not a single day return)

thanks.

You can stop off anywhere along the route back, so I think that's probably okay.

It's usually fine, although the station staff at the station you need to change at may not like it. As you're not allowed to smoke on train stations any more, a good way of getting past the turn-styles without having your ticket taken away is to ask if you can go outside for a quick cigarette between trains, then just leave. When you come back the next day try and use the ticket to get through, if they don't let you through then buy a ticket for 1 stop away to get you past the styles and then you can use the original ticket once you're on the train.

Chances are it'll be fine though.

As the train back will be quite late, im banking on there being no station staff around. Good idea about buying a ticket to the next stop though, thanks for your help!

Your ticket will not be valid for the second leg of your return journey after your overnight stay. If it gets marked, stamped or cut you'll struggle to use it again the next day - otherwise you might get lucky, but I wouldn't necessarily hold your breathe.

That's not true. The ticket will still be perfectly valid, as long as the following conditions are adhered to:

Break of journey for an overnight stay is allowed. Where a journey continues into the next day, travel must resume before 1200 and no further break of journey is allowed except to change trains.

So the OP is absolutely fine to make the stopover.

A woman and the train conductor were arguing about this on the train I was on yesterday. Glad I now know who was right
