Whoever said that makeup makes you age prematurely is wrong...

If anything, it actually helps, as a lot of foundations contain an SPF, and even if they don't, they still provide a barrier between your skin and the sun.

How about to look one's best? Make-up should be about enhancing. It should be believable, i.e. applied well in small quantities. I use mascara 97% of the time because it makes me look more awake, concealer for much the same reason, and sometimes blush/bronzer if I look particularly worn out. It's a matter of pride, I think, insignificant though it may be.
