It's cheating at its best it analyses the word for you... which declension, person etc.

Hi :]
I too am studying Cicero in Latin this year for AS. I will at some point learn it ALL! We have one hour per week on our timetable for Prose, 1 for Verse, 1 for Grammar and 1 for Unseen Translation practice and so far we've translated chapters 1-3 and a little of chapter 4 of the Cicero. As we translate the text in class, we look for literary features and make a note of them which seems to be working well. However I have also been looking around on the internet for analysis of the text etc and have found nothing of particular use! :[ - until I found this post of course so thank you all for the links :]

Hey, i did the Cicero and Ovid last year and i'd definitely recommend learing it - if just to make the translation section easier. The style questions are also easier to do if you know the text really well, especially the last big question as you have to refer to the whole translation, not just the passage on the page - I can't remember the exact details but i think June 09s questions were on how much Cicero's case rested on criticising Catiline personally (ithink!) and what makes Ovid a good story teller.

I learnt the translation in relation to the actual text which really helped me in the exam, just knowing the translation and not the Latin isn't that helpful! If you've got any questions, just ask!

I did AS Latin last year, with Ovid and Cicero. You are gonna need to know the textm, if not word for word, then enough to be able to know what's going on at any particular point.
You're not going to need that much background, but you are gonna need to know what Cicero is refering to when he says things like "senatus consultu". More importantly, you're gonna have to have the literary criticism down pat. It's worth a whole load of marks, and the last question will always be a mini essay, with a question like "How does Cicero represent himself throughout the speechh?" so be prepared for thematic comment.
If you can, grab a copy of the Cambridge Greek and Latin classics edition of the Catilinarians. It's got all the speeches in, and more commentary than you can shake a stick at. No translation though, but still it was my best friend for revision etc. It's ISBN 978-0-521-54043-8.

Is this book good in terms of literary techniques? I've got the translation but my teacher never takes us through the techniques used.

yeah i did in catilinam and metamorphoses last year, i would highly recommend making sure you know exactly how to translate everything - it's not that you necessarily NEED to know every word off by heart but it makes it so much easier to understand, and once you've conquered the translation you can get on with focusing on the texts as a whole

any questions, feel free to ask
