In my final year, part of the module assessment was careers training. Which covered interview techniques, covering letter styles, cv pros and cons etc.

I think this was a great idea because most of my classmates had no work experience at all! Universities certainly should implement this sort of training at some point during their courses.

Forgot to mention.

I found an official stats report for the government Graduate Scheme recently. There were 2 statistic positions available and over 10,000 (kid you not) applicants applied.

Bet those lucky 2 that got the job felt like they had won the lottery or something

Yeah thats the report. Thx

Wow, guess I over exaggerated my numbers

Maybe it was for the GCHQ I was referring to. Still, that report paints a good picture regarding the competitive nature of graduate schemes.

Those numbers would be right for GCHQ, but that scheme wasn't run last year and isn't this year.

I think the numbers in the FS report are iffy anyway.

I see. We never will know then...

I did apply for the Government Finance Professional (GFP) 2010 intake but failed to pass the screening. Was a bit annoyed since on their website; it states that if you meet the requirements (2.2 degree + only). Then you move to the next stage which is the online test.

But looking at that report...

Well the figures are the right order of magniture, but there might be some discrepancies. GFP isn't as competitive as Graduate FS.

Also the figures are for 2008 intake, applicants rose over 30% last year and for my scheme 190% this year following a 108% rise last year.

I'd say things were at around 50-1 rather than the more traditional 30-1. People apply for multiple employers though so its still only useful in terms of order of magnitude.

Your scheme? Which scheme (I assume you were successful) did you apply for and when?

A rather late congratulations too since you got in during the "30-1" days.

Technology in Business, '08 intake, only the second year hence our applications growth rate is much higher than the more established schemes. That report would suggest 19.7-1, but other figures would have said 40-1. Ta for the post it reminded me to poke the Cabinet Office to ask which set are correct.
