What do you think of that? (i.e., the previous winner picking the theme, then sitting out the next round but still getting a vote.)
Fine by me.
But, it puts a lot of pressure on Kater to come up with something decent for the prose, which, in fairness, we all seem to be at a bit of a loss to arrange. Then a winner might not want to or is unable to come up with something, but I suppose the intention is to cross that bridge when you get to it. If it's fine by Kater then we should push ahead.

1. What if... I am not here (on TSR) next time you do the competition? I might do, but once my sub runs out, I might not be using it very much.
2. What if... I do not have time (during the voting period) to read/vote? Again, only entered this month because I was having the weekend off post-essay completion.
I think you should maybe just go ahead and do it this way, but if the competition takes off and I am nowhere on TSR to be seen, MSB can contact me if he likes, but I may have to abstain from the voting bit.
Some really amazing poems here! I really enjoyed reading them all, and some of the lower ranked ones were as good as the higher ranked ones really. Dont be disheartened!
I really liked E, F, G, P, R
I wish I'd known about this, but I would have been out of my depth so perhaps its a good thing it passed me by

Kater Murr only won the poetry competition, so her choice of theme would only be for the next poetry competition, starting (on a monthly cycle, as JR suggested) on the 28th (i.e., the Saturday after next). We still need to find someone to collect entries for this competition, though, as she doesn't seem to have the time.
I think the same model would work for the prose competition, although in that instance we need to find someone to pretend to be the -1 winner (as in, the winner of a hypothetical competition previous to this first one we are currently planning) so that they can take the position of 'theme chooser'. Their vote can be a compensation for sitting the competition out, rather than a prize for a competition that didn't happen. I think you were the first volunteer, so if you want to do it then you're welcome to start thinking about it and kicking off the competition as soon as you have something that you think will work. If you don't want to do it, I'm sure we can find someone else. Similarly for the role of collecting entries, etc.; I'm sure we can find someone for that too.

I can't imagine picking a theme for the next poetry competition would take very long. No one is asking you to put too much thought on it. A minute hitting a Random Word Generator on the Internet until something you like comes out is enough. I'm sure you will have a minute of free time between now and the 28th. You don't have to collect entries, etc., as someone else can be found to do that, so all you need to do is either PM your idea to them, or post it in the correct thread.
Since you are not taking part, there is no mathematical issue with you abstaining from voting, and since your vote would be your prize for winning previously, it's your discretion whether you choose to use it or not.

I wasn't really talking about the theme - I already gave JR one - I just meant about voting. Which, as I've already said, isn't necessarily an issue.

Splitting this for simplicity.
1. I'm happy to collect, tally votes and display entries for the Poetry Competition on the 28th of November.
2a. I have a few ideas, but I am a little worried about putting up something too difficult. On a scale of 1 - 10, how mad will you be if I set something too weird, and the competition consequently gets no entries? I expect it will receive fewer than the Poetry Comp. anyway.
b. I'd be happy to collect the Prose entries as well. I'm busy but not busy, and it makes sense to merge the roles.
3. Will there be an overall 'prose' and 'poetry' thread, or do you intend to create a new one with each fresh competition? Would you like me to simply create a thread in The Gallery for the first Prose Competition when ready?

I really can't be bothered to read through these massive posts which have a lot more text than what they actually say. I tried, but I reckon someone can summarise. What's going on with this prose competition?

heh, we're already on our second thread, way way ahead. 11,000 posts of Pokémon.

In fairness, this is a thread involving writing competitions.
Very good. Now fill me in on the prose competition pls.
JR is going to stand on his head, and MSB and Kater Murr are going to throw scrunched up bits of Conrad at him.
The prose competition will be taking place soon and is currently being sorted out. You'll know the same as everyone else when a thread is created outlining it. If you want to enter again in a poetry competition, the next one should be taking place on the 28th.

Alright, thanks. There were a lot of posts about it and I thought something might have been decided but it was difficult to tell. I shall keep my eyes peeled.

This is all on the assumption that you're happy to not enter either forthcoming competition. Are you sure you want to organise both the prose and poetry competitions?
It doesn't matter if it is weird, as long as it isn't too closed off. What I mean is, a good starting point would be one that has the possibility of people taking it in lots of different directions. Actually, weirdness would probably achieve that. If people complain about it, they can piss off. The whole point is to test people to do things differently and to react to 'competition conditions' for the sake of having a reason to write something.
I think, for now, it would be better to make a new thread once a month. Presumably they won't all be as big as this one has become, but it makes things easier.
If you're going to start a thread to kick off the prose competition (which you can do whenever you want, as far as I'm concerned, as I think we have all the ideas sorted now), can I suggest you either do it a week before (so, this week) or a week after the poetry competition? I can foresee them clashing together, especially if people want to enter both.

S'fine.
If anyone would like to recieve a PM when the Prose Competition has been posted, please PM me and I'd be happy to send you notice.

My interest in this really is solely because I never seem to give myself the time to just write. With the element of comparison and the deadline I'd be fine with just writing something for myself, and not entering it in the competition.
I'm also not, like most of you, having to write essays and things in my own time, and as I don't really register effort or boredom when I'm doing something that isn't for my own benefit, the arrangement suits the situation perfectly. All fine by me.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I should have the thread up this week - look forward to it, prospective entrants.
The quote is a personal favourite of mine, and do try not to be intimidated. It has the same effect which occurs when you turn over the front page of an examination, and find the question impossibly hard, before ideas slowly start to seep into being. Good luck, all.
EDIT: Nice to see a positive response. You have no idea how high my blood pressure just went.
