Completly hypocritical and even worse if they try and take some moral highground over others.
So you're saying that those in the video are immune from criticism? And clearly, I'm only referring to those in the video; it'd be asinine to generalise the entirety of China here. I fully accept that those in the 'West' also participate, directly or not, in practices of similar consequences but I do not consider myself to be one of them.

There are other cultures which does this, like some of the Japanese cutting the fish to pieces into sashimi while its still alive, and boiling the lobsters and mussels here, or in some African tribes eating a worm whole or taking a snake's organ out while its still alive to eat it. We owe it on our humanity to at least kill the animal before we eat it really.
There are worst stories like this about humans too. There are witness saying that the Japanese during WW2 take chinese people, peel their skins while they are alive and awake and do various 'scientific tests' to their nerve ends. There are more but that is a story for another time. The point is, we should detest the humanity of these individuals not the whole culture/community.

Who gives a ****? We kill animals/fish because we need food to survive. Why don't these animal rights campaigners **** off to Africa and campaign about how brutally Lions and Hyenas kill their pray? And I know people will say "we don't need meat from animals to survive", well I really enjoy meat (KFC in particular) and I don't give two ****** about how they're killed to be honest. Watching that KFC video has not put me off one bit!

An analogy would be beating children. Perfectly acceptable in lots of cultures, whereas apparently over here it's against the child's 'rights' to be beaten with a belt etc.

It's human construct not to commit murder. Doesn't rule out the fact that it's most likely inhumane. Unnecessary pain shouldn't be justified in any culture. Think about the religious background places like China used to have, and you'd quickly realise it's not just a western idea to not induce high level harm.

Well yes, if you can't relate to the suffering of other animals then I doubt those sort of videos will have any affect on you. I have no problem with people eating animal products so long as they are slaughtered as humanely as possible. I feel that we have an obligation to minimise the suffering of other species, particularly when it can be readily done.

I've watched quite a few of the big cat documentaries as my dad is obsessed with them. It's not that often they hunt such large animals but they tend to go for them when they're injured or in large numbers - 10+ lions take down one hippo. Once it's on the floor they just all start eating it whilst it's alive, they can't really kill it as they normal just bite the neck to kill the animal, that's a bit hard with a hippo. But it eventually just dies when they're all eating it. Not the best video, you have to watch the documentaries for better footage.

I know it may sound hypocritical as I do quite a lot of fishing but I find that video appalling. Yes as a fisherman I find great pleasure in catching fish and releasing them once more, but to cause it that much pain is just not right. That's really spoilt my mood, after I just got an unconditional offer aswell

Because oysters have an extremely minimal nervous system whereas fish have a moderately prominent one.

but one might argue that oysters are very simple animals (they don't even posses a brain) so animal rights might not apply to them as much..

You could be fined in the UK for mistreating big pets like dogs, cats but no one would say anything if you stomped on a few beetles..

most Chinese don't do this. Western media loves digging the dirt on our country, however small it is.

It's not really that amazing, tastes like chicken, but knowing that it's snake, now THAT'S really what's gross. Dogs, no I have never tried it, and I really don't want to either. And also it seems that this video was taken in a city/province that speaks Cantonese so it's safe to say that's NOT really China, or at least majority parts of China, unless maybe it's Hangzhou or Hong Kong... Ok that's not important haha. I guess what I wanted to say was that don't think Chinese people are all sick and cruel and disgusting just because people do eat these things; it's not all people. For the most part, I wouldn't even touch those animals. But yes, sadly certain parts of China they do have some quite extreme dishes.

Can't they just be cantonese speaking people who went to a restaurant somewhere in China that served that dish? They don't necessarily have to be a city that speaks cantonese. It could be anywhere from a little village to a major city like Shanghai. But point taken, we can't assume that it's served everywhere and all chinese people eat it.

I saw this in a documentary about Japan (where, evidently, they also do it) on BBC Four last year; I don't know what to think of it really.

You do realise that alot of canine species eat their prey while it is still alive. Brown bears and African wild dogs are probably the best example. Hyenas for example kill their prey while consuming it. Alot of birds, fish and lizards also tuck in while the prey is still alive.
