Default How far would you travel to go to university

I'm planning on starting university in 2010 and my mum keeps having a go at me because apparently all my university choices are too far away?!

How far are/were you prepared to travel from home to uni?
My furthest option is about 4 hours from home

unless you're coming home for the weekend/very often I don't think it matters really. Wherever you're happy.

I'm hopefully going about 4 and a half to 5 hours away (depending on traffic etc.) I don't really have a limit to how far I'd go if the place was right for me. I've become a bit nervous of planes though, so preferably it'd be somewhere that wouldn't take too long to drive to/go on the train to.

I live in Cambridge, and I'm looking at Scotland, so that's about 9-10 hours away. Don't look at the distance, look at the course. If your choices are really good for the course you want then just go for it. At the end of the day if your mum is worried about the distance away now, then how on earth is she going to cope when you're an adult and not living at home? They have to let go of us someday, and distance is always one of the last things to consider.

Opposite end of the country. Plymouth - Edinburgh . As LittleMissStone said, look at the course not at the distance. Although it's going to cost me tons to come back.

I am applying to all the places that are not within everyday travelling distance from my home so I'm even looking at Scotland as well and abroad too.

Well I didn't want to go too far away - my uni's just under 2 hours away from home, as I wanted the option of going home some weekends. But it's really up to you - apply to unis that you think you'd be most suited to. Anyway, you can always move back closer to home after you've finished your degree.

My mum said pretty much the same thing but I just ignored her. I'm really set on going to Leeds, and I live in Dorset so it'll be about 6/7 hours for me. I did consider Germany as I'm planing to move there anyway, but thought the whole thing might get crazily expensive if I did, plus their courses tend to be reallly long (like 6 years apparently according to my German teacher ). Not planning to come home at all often so it doesn't bother me how far away I am.

Haha, my mum was shocked and appalled when I told her I wouldn't be going home every weekend. Don't let your parents influence your decision AT ALL - it's your life, it's gonna be your debt, it's gonna be your career. Do what is best for you - if they don't like it, that's bloody tough, isn't it?
Obviously, if you parents are paying for everything, best to keep them onside...haha.
EDIT: forgot to mention, I'm 3 hours from home, 4 with heavy traffic (which is usual). Did at one point consider going to Belfast and I live in the midlands...

I'm only a couple of hours away by train. Can come home when I want but not too far away that I can only come home in the holidays.

Is entirely up to you depends on whether you think you will want to go home a lot?

When I first started thinking about university, I was looking at going to Australia to study, and perhaps visiting home once a year...
I thought it was a fantastic idea but ultimatly decided I couldnt afford it. My furtherst option is now just 3 hours car journey away, and my closest is just over an hour away.

I'd go to the furthest place on Earth if I liked the uni there. My furthest choice is 8653km away, the closes one (which is a backup I don't really want to go to) is like 20 minutes by metro.

I'll hopefully be starting in 2010 too =)
Haha i'm in the same position with my parents.
All the 5 uni's i've applied to are quite a fair way from where I live.
I live in Yorkshire and the 2 furthest uni's i've applied to are Canterbury Christ Church and Cumbria.
The other 3 are Derby, Worcester and Winchester and they're still a bit of a way from Yorkshire.
