Re: The MUN Off-Topic Thread MkII
On the invasion of Iraq 60% of Americans were convinced Saddam Hussain was behind 9/11.
80% of those in favour of the war cited this as one of the chief reasons they favoured an invasion.
85% of Americans can't locate Iraq on a world map (I tested this with my 7 year old brother who located it in moments despite the map having no country labels) though only 66% were unable to locate the island used in the latest season of the television show Survivor to within an approximated South Pacific area.
48% of young Americans did not know that the Taliban and al Qaeda were in Afghanistan. 30% of Americans polled believe that the US has close to a third of the worlds population.
15% of Americans don’t know that the Earth revolves around the sun.
Only 20% of Americans know that there are 100 senators, despite the number has remained constant for the last half century (and is easy to remember).
90% of Americans claim they have never heard of the Norman conquest of the UK in 1066.
51% of Americans did not know which country dropped nuclear bombs on Japan.
30% of polled Americans did not know what the holocaust was.
In 1985 19% could not identify Martin Luther King, Jr.
Only 34% know that it is the Congress that declares war.
Only 35% know that Congress can override a presidential veto.
Some 49% think the president can suspend the Constitution.
Some interesting statistics.
