There is nothing to suggest in any of the four Hayek books I've read that the man was what you might describe as a utilitarian.

No my point was that if you consider Nozick to be a utilitarian why not consider Hayek or Mises to be utilitarians as well? Btw, I do not think that Nozick was a utilitarian... He came up with the "utility monster" expirement to discredit utilitarianism . And Hayek has used utilitarian arguments in Law, Legislation and Liberty regarding how would a "good society" function. There's a book called Hayek on Liberty by John Gray where the writer explains further Hayek's "utilitarianism". There's also Hayek's biography by Alan Ebenstein for more info.

As I said, that's how I understood Nozick to be. I could be wrong, as I said, I haven't read ASU yet.

I'm not sure any libertarian philosopher could be described as utilitarian at the same time and stay coherent. Amartya Sen wrote an article proving why it's not possible to be a utilitarian and believe liberty has any innate value at the same time (nor even being in the Pareto principle and believe liberty has some innate value). It's called the Impossibility of a Paretian Liberal, in case anyone wants to read it
