SOAS graduates just have to work harder to succeed once they leave their little drug laced commune.

If the answer is yes, then the university will probably be respectable, although the course you choose will have an effect too.

Thats kind of true. I'm doing English and French but I wouldn't trust a university that didn't offer subjects such as law, politics, philosophy, maths, medicine and chemistry. Those subjects (and also languages and English themselves) seem to be the mark of a good university.

Interesting that one of your UCAS choices doesn't offer courses in Medicine, Law, Dentistry, Vet Med or even Teaching.

Don't judge books by their covers...

SOAS is just grand. The current Higher Education Minister went there, and he went to Harvard as well.

Point
Set

Match....

The idea of judging a university on the basis of what the general public have heard of is just silly. If the opinions of other people matter, at least ask ones who know what they're talking about rather than just the man or woman in the street who could be entirely ignorant on the subject of universities.

Ask 10 people in the street if they have heard of Katie Price/Jordan.
Then ask them if they've heard of Nabokov.

Is the most famous writer the best?

avoid name brand unis with large international student body that hangs out exclusively in nat'l groups, research oriented faculty who can't be bothered with undergrads, poor social life with no cohesion or school spirit, preponderance of "make work" assignments that don't get marked, and generally sloppy administration
