Geographical Rivals: Rangers
Traditional Rivals: Rangers
Others: HSV, Rapid Vienna, Atletico Madrid.
I do hate Rangers. They are a bigoted club. This has been shown a few times by the club and the fans. They didn't have a black player until the mid-80s. They sold Alex Ferguson as soon as they could after he married his Catholic wife. There was even outrage at their manager, Paul le Guen a few years back and the fans even asked him how often he went to church. They are a violent crowd, shown at the UEFA Cup final in Manchester. Their fans are scum tbf. There are too many reports of Rangers supporters attacking Celtic fans, while i admit there are some vice versa. There is also a lot of religious and political reasons, which I won't get into as it's very complicated and not even I fully understand some of it, but everyone knows about complaints about sectarian chanting.
HATE HATE HATE.
The other teams are just after heated matches and the rivalry has lasted. HSV are also linked with Rangers and Celtic are linked with HSV's rivals, St Pauli.
EDIT: Just realised that people have explained it better than I have. Read theirs.
it the match it all gets heated, people lose it or just people are there just looking for trouble
i don't mind fulham, spurs chelsea are greater then anyone else, its all good fun, plus when you know people who support them its all good banter
Hey just wanted to say that I am a Spurs fan and was at the Lane for the West Ham game.
You guys really do get heated up for that fixture I was on the boundary between home and away fans and if there weren't like 50 policemen between us there definitely would have been a fight.
Good game and even better results. Great goal from Defoe
Arsenal. They were the 2nd team in N London and they are not English - you cannot have zero Englishmen in your starting line up and claim to be English.
Saying that they are a better version of Spurs. The fact that they aren't English means that they don't choke when it counts - which is every bloody injury time.
and yeah you are right about the qpr thing..also millwall when we were in league one..always used to have fights along new road and the road up to the train station.. bad times..
but as for tottenham, biggest wannabe club in the world..we get a new stadium they want a new stadium.. we get champo league, they want champo league..albeit they've been trying for years but like a barren woman, it is not to be spurs..we have an academy, they start their own academy..
someone just destroy the club please
Thats ironic considering that we were in N London first. Go back to SE London.
United. Does it need explaining? The 'local' rivals. They're from Trafford, not Manchester; many of their fans are southern daytrippers and from halfway across the globe, they've got a cretin for a manager, the officials help them on a regular basis by giving them just enough injury time to pull it off. Urgh.
ah the bitterness that comes across in this post is typical of your average lil ciddy fan. Such small little things to try and annoy us, but that's all they have, bless em x

Ah feck off, bitter? Are we . Jealous? Are we . We're going to be up there, you're going to be in massive debt. It will come crashing down when the banks want their money back.
I've been thinking a lot recently about why rivalries between teams develop, but also why they become sustained. I can understand a lot of disputes between teams when they're based on geography and that sort of thing, but when the rivalry isn't territorial sometimes the reasons for it being kept going over time become less clear.
To use my own team as an example, not many younger Brentford fans understand why we have a rivalry with Birmingham City, myself included. I've sort of read up on it and can see why it happened at the time and then find myself disliking them more because of it, even though it didn't affect me at all at the time.
Why do you hate your team's nearest geographical rivals? (Or, why don't you hate them?)
Why do you have your team's more traditional rivals? (Or, why not?)
That sort of thing. It interests me.
For me, I'm going to pick out Brentford's main rivals as QPR, Fulham, Chelsea and Birmingham City for now.
QPR: probably the team we hate the most, because of proximity. Personally when I first started supporting Brentford I was fairly indifferent to QPR, but when we were in the same league as them and I went to the derbies it was infectious, I couldn't help hating them and their scummy fans. We got the same buses to the matches and you literally couldn't stand on the same bus as them without their being violence. Being Brentford, we blamed it on them. Then they signed Martin Rowlands from us, one of our best players. All the Rangers fans I knew at school were . Also, historically, in the late 60s there was a takeover bid launched by them that would have seen us assume their name and identity whilst they got our stadium. Old feuds like that die hard, we were lucky to get a loan in to save us.
Fulham: I don't mind Fulham at all because of the time I started supporting Brentford. By the time I was conscious of proper rivalries they were above us in the league and eventually established themselves as a Premiership team with the kind of ethos I like. Craven Cottage reminds me of Griffin Park to a degree as well. The guys at GP who are a few generations above me hate Fulham almost as much as QPR and I've seen older Fulham supporters going about in kits with "I 8 Brentford" on the back. So clearly this is one that just passed me by, and Fulham are now my favourite London PL club.
Chelsea: I like them less than Fulham but don't really have a problem with them, despite the money that's been pumped in. Most people at school were Arsenal or United fans and the Chelsea guys were always the nicer people, totally coincidentally. Also, QPR hate them a hell of a lot, so I'm predisposed to liking them. It's a fairly indifferent opinion, but I prefer them to Arsenal.
Birmingham City: team full of scrotes. Urgh. I disliked them even before I found out that I was "meant to" as a Brentford fan, and as Villa fit the kind of club I like, I'm even happier to dislike them. And then they signed DJ Campbell from us, ruining our 2005 promotion bid. Asshats.
Your turn. Why do you actually have the opinions you do on your team's rivals?
I don't hate Hayes and Yeading - primarily because they are very good whipping boys, same with the club we ground share with - Kingstonian.
Thats ironic considering that we were in N London first. Go back to SE London.
but no one knew there was ever a tottenham till we were in northlondon..we basically made you who you are..crawl back into your hole of mediocrity please. will do the rest of us much good..

a) It is not a hole of mediocrity it is more like a cave - a very interesting one.
b) Utter rubbish, Spurs were well known before a bunch of random SE Londoners came onto our plot of land. Your statement is kind of like saying it was ok for the Normans to invade because no one had really heard of England.
c) We are the only English team in N London anyway. It was great to see you guys starting so many Englishmen in your starting line up. Was it 1 Englishman the other day? Oh my bad, it was 0 - I forgot that European clubs don't really like to play Englishmen. Go back to France.

face it..spurs are worthless
1) Have been for a long time.
2) We actually were well known before Arsenal, thank you very much. White Hart Lane used to hold 75000 people in the early 1900s because we were so popular - that is 75000 standing.
3) It is not a sign of desperation - I personally believe that the Spurs squad is better than the Arsenal one. Face it you beat us 3-0 when our best two players were injured, Modric and Lennon, and our two best center backs were on the road to injury - Woodgate and King.
4) Defoe, King, Crouch, Lennon are all good. But you are forgetting Woodgate, Huddlestone, Dawson - I don't rate Bentley either, at least when he plays for Spurs - Jenas is good when he is in form but he is utter when he is not.
You guys have two good English players: Walcott and Wilshere.
Walcott was beast until his injury and I guess he is still recovering - I hope he is.... because he has been playing like a blind old woman on a wheelchair in recent games.
Wilshere is good, needs to develop more. Your overseas stars are keeping him out of the team and developing - although I guess you wouldn't want him thrown in too early.
All those English players you named are just like Ben Alnwick - no one cares about them and they never get playing time even if they do rotate on the subs bench. It must be tough for the English players to train in such a foreign environment. What language do they use for training? Probably French.

good for you..
sorry hart lane did what???
are you kidding?? woodgate makes michael owens knee look like steel.. dawson is only good for his headers and as for huddlestone pfft..not so long ago you were slagging him off for putting on weight..
i think you forgot to add gibbs to that.. cant understand why you didnt since hes going to be in SA as cover for A hole
our players do get playing time though thats the thing(carling and fa cup).. yours dont..LOL funnyy..NOT! im sorry palacios cant even speak a word of english and no one has ever heard assou-ekotto speak

A) Emirates has a atmosphere and everybody knows it.
B) Woodgate is a great defender, the fact that he is injury prone does not take away from the fact that he is a better than all your foreign defenders.
C) We regularly play at least 5 English players in our first side, you guys don't play any. Don't tell me that we don't give playing time to Englishmen.
D) Okay, one guy does not speak English. Your entire squad doesnt speak English - I would be surprised if the stadium announcer at the Emirates did not start every match with 'bonjour! Ca va?'
Ah feck off, bitter? Are we . Jealous? Are we . We're going to be up there, you're going to be in massive debt. It will come crashing down when the banks want their money back.
not as MASSIVE as CITEH though eh
you may be on your way up now thanks to selling your identity to some rich foreigners but that doesn't change the fact that for the past 30 plus years you've been nothin more than an embarrassment to manchester

I wonder who they nicked that idea from?
Some of the patter in this thread is giving me a red neck on posters' behalf.

i don't really understand what you're gettin at...
our foreigners aren't rich, they're mongs that have put us into debt like the city fan said haha, nah but the point of what i was sayin is they have always gone on about how they are the club of the people blah blah blah but as soon as a rich foreigner came along they were happy to bend over and sell their identity- at least we tried to prevent the same happening to us.
