ugh grumble i feel like what i am designing has the potential to turn out hideously ugly unless i do it really well. damn, wish i had someone harsh for my interim crit on friday. but i don't. wahwah, etcetc.
Im the same, i feel i may of set myself up for a fall if i don't get my ideas right, it may look awful.

We should just go for something boring and safe instead...

Ugh it is making me horribly anxious 24/7, i need to chill out somehow.
my laptop has DIED argh!!!!!!!!
Ok, i typed up a long rant and i pressed refresh and it went.

Basically, Project on an island, complete pain in the arse. End.
99.8% of the time I hate the theatre I am currently designing (or failing to.)
****, what the hell do i do?!?!?!?
ooo wish I'd seen this thread sooner....

I have been looking for a job since July with no luck... I can feel the architecture world crumbling :frown:... I want a job dammit!!!!

are you sure there are no job vacancies??
i was about to get a job interview in a PR firm that specialise with architecture firms such as bennetts, John McAslan + Partners, RMJM etc.

they withdrew after i told them I was only a 2nd year student and havent even finished uni yet. lol

even yesterday, i managed to bag summer work experience with the owner of an architecture firm when he did a talk at my university yesterday. he then went on to say, that all his workers are westminster graduates.

anyways, its how to approach things. its no longer a case of sending a portfolio and cv.
The only vacancies that I find are down in London or once in a blue moon, the midlands.
I've already spoken to my careers advisor, and he has said my CV and cover letter is perfectly fine and I should try ringing up firms (which is the approach I will be taking).

I'm not sure if there is another way of doing things? :s-smilie:

visit the office with a hardcopy sample portfolio/ knock on doors/ look abroad. The cover letter should be tailored to each office too or it goes in the bin - best of luck though.. are you joining a masters course in sept?
I fail at technical drawing/detail/stuff.
90% of the time this week I have been feeling like this course is too hard for me.
I'm not feeling this project at all, can't do, can't do. ARGH HAVE TO.

Sorry highers years :frown:

Me too :frown:

Our tutor told us on Friday that we have a week to design this "retreat" we're doing, and she wants to see plans, sections and a model this Friday :eek3:

Nobody had even had the chance to start this project because we've been so insanely busy with the group projects we were doing before. I'm really struggling with coming up with my design, and the fact that it has to be done so soon is just making me panic so it's even harder.

And my flatmates are pissed off because I'm not going out with them tonight. I HAVE NO TIME. UGH. Right, I need to get off TSR now and try and get my head around this.

pah, your careers advisor doesn't know much when it comes to architecture jobs, its a totally different ball game. whats your portfolio like? do you send one out with your covering letter and cv?

also you need to creative with your job application.architect firms get sent hundreds of applications everyday. you need to stand out from the crowd.
you only get a 10 second glance when the HR manager sees your CV in their inbox and then it gets lost in the hundreds of other job applications.

not to be mean, but did not think to try and network with the visiting architects/ lecturers that came to your uni? you should always speak to them, get their names, get their email addresses etc.
this is your way in by making connections!

It feels like you didn't do this whilst at university and therefore its obviously harder to get a job.

failing that do what quiller suggested. get hard copies of your cv and portfolio and go into practices. aim for the smaller under 20 something office and go in and ask to speak to someone and drop your cv in.

alot of vacancies are unadvertised so try sending your application to the RIBA architectural practices listing.
No you're not being mean, I didn't take proper advantage of that to be honest. It's not an excuse by any means, but I did go to lectures and seminars but I didn't actually go speak to the lecturer.. it's not something I really thought of at the time :s-smilie:... I sound like a total idiot now when I read back on that.
I think I relied too much on the fact that I had about 3 to 4 personal contacts who could have scored me a job, and then the recession hit and that was it.

I have designed my CV so that it does stand out from the crowd, we were trained on that early on in third year so no problems there. It has examples of my work and a link to my website that displays my whole portfolio.

As you suggest, and Quiller... I sent off CVs and personalised cover letters early on postgraduation, to firms of 20 and under.. I knew which ones to apply to in that respect having some work experience behind me. I have begun ringing up the firms now as they told me to keep in touch so fingers crossed on that one.
As for knocking on doors with a portfolio at hand... that's really not me and to be honest gives a bad impression. I prefer phoning firms as it allows me to speak to someone and arrange a meeting or something.

And Quiller... I am applying for my postgraduate degree at the moment.

Thanks for all the suggestions.. I guess I just need to be more cut throat which unfortunately is really not in my personality :ninja:

NEED HELP FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS 3DS PLEASE

I imported a wall section from Revit (supposedly in mm) and set up my units as mm in 3ds, and then proceeded to extrude various elements (like bricks) to give a 3D-cutaway detail section. Halfway through this process I realised that my dimensions were completely off. I carried on regardless, but now I've tried to apply material textures and everything is coming out totally wrong (bricks the wrong size, etc.) I highlighed everything and rescaled it to what I thought it was supposed to be, but the textures are still wrong. I've tried to fiddle around with the UVW mapping but have no idea what I'm doing so can't really get it to look right.

Any advice?

I don't use 3ds I use maxwell but i guess the principles are the same. if the model is now correct it sounds like UV texture mapping problem. In maxwell there are two types of mapping - normalised and adjusted. Normalised is where the texture is tiled onto the surface, adjusted means the texture is stretched to fit the surface. I don't know which one you need without seeing your model. There is usually an option you have to select for either planar, cubic, cylindrical etc mapping. Cubic is usually ok, then set the texture to either normalise or adjusted and then its just a case of scaling the texture until it looks right in the render... try factors in the region of X3, just try it until it looks right then fine tune it.

Hope some of that might have been useful, perhaps there are similar options in 3DS as in maxwell.

Spoiler

On the right hand menu, do you think I should be adjusting the length/width/height or mess around with the u/v/w tiling?
3DS is so un-straightforward.

Thanks for your help though!
Interim crit tomorrow, and ive done no work! I keep doing nothing, which is annoying, i know i have the ability to do the work, just not the motivation. Oh well. Looks like im on for an alnighter. which is a bit rubbish, monday is pub night.

Hah I had mine last last Friday, I was so worried I thought I was going to be sick just before hand. It turned out a lot better than expected actually... although I'm (nearly) back to square one.

Good luck!

(And pub day? JEALOUS.)

Oh Ecotect, how I despise you.

Yeah, i shouldnt technically have time for a pub night, but i need to have some fun or i will go mental.

Tomorrow should be ok tbh, its nothing huge, we are still at the start of the project, just about pitching first ideas, schemes and concepts, which i have, just, not on paper. Oh well, thanks anyways
