Scotland to England for uni?
Ahh I'm so confused. I live in Scotland, I can get free uni up here and I have offers. However England's student atmosphere seems soo much better. I don't know what to do. Stay in Scotland and regret not going to England or go to England and be in a whole heap of debt?
Help?!? -
Re: Scotland to England for uni?
I know what you mean. I thought about applying to Leeds, my friend who had the same highers as me got an offer from them the same year, so i kinda wish I had at least applied. Though when I thought about it, I didn't really see the point in landing myself in so much debt when I could get a 'free' education here. If you're that determind about moving away, why not move somewhere further from home? For example, I applied to Aberdeen and Dundee and I live near Glasgow, so it's still quite far away but you still get the benefit of having no fees, only accomidation.
I decided to stay in Glasgow though afterall that

Re: Scotland to England for uni?Yeahh it's the debt thing that's making me think most about it. If people down there can do it surely I can aswell.(Original post by pamelaa)

I live in Edinburgh, been offered places in Glasgow and Dundee.
Is Glasgow a good place for students? -
Re: Scotland to England for uni?Not to be harsh, but if you're applying for unis like Glasgow Caley & Abertay (who aren't the most 'respected' but they do have their own specialised areas like I hear Abertay is good for computing courses.) then you should probably stay in Scotland. It's hard to get into good English universities without advanced higher A's. So you're probably better staying at home...(Original post by Zainab7)
Glasgow Caledonian and Abertay Dundee
What course are you doing?
I guess it depends on that too!

Re: Scotland to England for uni?Glasgow is an AMAZING place for students! I would have gone there but I don't like the way they teach my course. Edinburgh and Aberdeen are good too, and everyone i know in Dundee loves it.(Original post by Zainab7)

Honestly, I don't know why you think the English student life is so much better - if it's because of what you read on here then that's just because 90% of people on TSR go to English unis! -
Re: Scotland to England for uni?Criminology, which is a fairly new course. Most likely the reason that it's not in the more "academic" universities. The more "respected" universities don't really do Criminology as it's quite a narrow field.(Original post by pamelaa)

Re: Scotland to England for uni?mmm, Glasgow's definately the place to be a student. But I think Abertay is a better university.(Original post by Zainab7)
Glasgow Caledonian and Abertay Dundee
Criminology - maybe try Forensic Medicine course/law schools - in England and Scotland. Caledonian Uni has an LL.B. programme (law degree) - youll get more criminology (theory and law) out of an LLB than an Criminaology course I think. Maybe ask for a transfer once your in?
If you go for the LLB - Cale is better than Abertay.
I dont think I've been much help -
Re: Scotland to England for uni?
im from scotland and am going to england - newcastle . last year i got offers from edinbrugh, glasgow, aberdeen, dundee and st andrews uni. i live just outside st andrews and i know all the places really well and wanted something new from being a student so i decided newcastle was right for me. though it costs more its better than being stuck somewhere you don't want to be. Also your forgetting honours degrees are only 3 years in england and 4 in scotland soo your saving a whole year of rent etc!
-
Re: Scotland to England for uni?Yes... but you're also paying £9,500 in tuition fees. (I'm also at Newcastle, just sayin)(Original post by justasmalltowngirl)

Yes... but you're also paying £9,500 in tuition fees. (I'm also at Newcastle, just sayin)
true
but i suppose you could always look at it like if you finish a year early thats a year more working where even if you were earning
15 000 a year that still mean 15000-9500= 5500 pounds more
but as i said thats just my opinion im not saying im right.
anyway im sure youll make the right choice op for you -
Re: Scotland to England for uni?Don't kid yourself. For most subjects Caledonian is the best of the two. Yeah, I was gonna suggest that you do an LLB or, even a BA in Law, because I know that at strathy you do a lot of criminology in second year.(Original post by ViaVeritasVita)
mmm, Glasgow's definitely the place to be a student. But I think Abertay is a better university.

Having said that, my friend at Plymouth is doing criminology and she seems to enjoy it. -
Re: Scotland to England for uni? It's a **** state of affairs, being essentially bribed thousands of pounds to stay in a backwater. I really think something ought to be done about that.(Original post by Zainab7)

Re: Scotland to England for uni?I certainly do, but you don't have to think that to agree with me. Say SAAS contributes £x to a university in Scotland for a student domiciled in Scotland - why not contribute that £x to a university in England, Wales or Northern Ireland for the same thing?(Original post by pamelaa)
So you think we should have to pay for fees? -
Re: Scotland to England for uni?I guess it's a bribe like you say, they want us to stay here. I know that if I was given a chose like you mentioned above, I probably would have moved away. However, I'm sure that people from England, Wales and NI would have something to say about that, because they have to pay to study in their own country, and if the goverment did give us money to study in those countries then we're basically getting a free education, and they're not in their countries. I think you can justify the government paying money for Scottish students to study in Scotland but not in ni/wales/england.(Original post by L i b)
