Ustinov College

This is obviously aimed at graduate students, but I'd welcome "outsiders" views of it aswell :smile:

I've just applied for an MA and put Ustinov College down as my preferred place. What is your impression of it? Nice place for a young (21) postgrad to spend a year or would I be better off mixing with Undergrads?

I should be at Ustinov too, I think there will be a fair few younger postgrads (i'm 22) there if you are worried about the age gap.

It's a really nice place, seems quite calm whenever I go there, but always very friendly. I don't really know anyone from there so I can't tell you much more.

Nice bar. They've got a lot of interesting international events on. I crashed Ustinov Day last year too and it was quite fun -- there were lots of families and little kids running around at the barbecue outside but there were also lots of younger postgrads enjoying the live music in the bar so I think it's quite a good mix.

I'll be at Ustinov too as of September doing a PGCE. When choosing a college I did wonder whether I'd be better off in a college with undergrads but I've spent the past 3years as an undergrad and the whole undergrad lifestyle has exhausted me tbh, I've had enough of going out and getting terribly drunk so the opportunity to mix with older people from more diverse backgrounds clinched it for me. Also, when I went to have a look around the accommodation seemed lovely and they seemed to have lots of social events that were oriented towards different nationalities and drinking wasn't the central focus. God I sound old! But as a (soon to be) 21 year old UK student I'm quite looking forward to being a bit more mature and having a taste of the international flavour that the mix of students bring to Ustinov.

I've actually already make up my mind to take the Ustinov, though.. Hahahha.. but according to your opinions it sounds terribly humble. I may not survive there.. :frown:

Could please someone let me (or us) know about the age range of students live there? And, what are they actually doing during their time offs?

Not sure how helpful I can be but my boyfriend it as Ustinov now and he seems to quite like it there. There seems to be a fair mix of ages, he's only 23 and from what I've seen there are quite a lot of people his age about but I think there's a fair few older people too! The bar is really nice and the rooms are pretty good, he has a huge desk! Not sure how helpful this all is but I'm sure you'll all like it there :smile:

If you find it too mature (or too dark) there is always J Butler College just as close, in fact the IT Service secretly consider it to be the same college (computers on the same local network).

i will be in Ustinov this sep. found accomodation in Gilesgate. how far this area is from Ustinov? do any bus service available?

i heard university has night time bus. is it true? how it works?

Helo!

I have been given admission in PhD in Business Management(Ustinov) with research topic in Finance. I have been awarded scholarship from an external agency and they will be covering all fee and living costs.
I have started looking for accommodation but after looking at the prices and the laws and regulations, I have decided that I will be better off in a private house. I am unable to decide the location where to live. Distance doesn't matter to me as long as there is a bus service available.
If anyone can guide me or anyone wish to share house with me, please let me know. I have done Bachelor of Engineering and MBA Finance with positions. I have a considerable teaching experience in finance, economics and mathematics/statistics. So, anyone looking for my assistance in studies is more than welcomed.

Is there much of a difference between the people who go in to the MSc. Acccount & Finance and Msc. Finance programs?

I don't really think there is a major difference between the courses you mentioned. All are specialist courses in their own terms and have credibility in the job market. But I would suggest you to go through the university's programs and their specific course contents! It would give you a broader picture and also make the differences between the mentioned courses apparent!...btw have you applied to durham univ.?
