Could the Lib Dems win the election?
    Hey all

I was thinking, if Nick Clegg performs as well in the next 2 debates as well as in the first, where would it put the lib dems in the election?

    1st place, 2nd place, or 3rd place?

3rd. Unfortunately I don't think it'll be enough to swing the "oh, he won't get in so no point voting for him" mentality.

then again, he's doing well off of the "Guh, I hate both of them, stuff it I'll vote for him" attitude

I don't think they would, and even if they got the majority of the vote share, they'd have to get a metric **** ton to actually get the most seats (which is, ultimately, how one "wins" a general election).

I'd love to say yes but I think this will be one election too soon.

No. As much as it would be good.
It was saying on the news that a swing of 6% against Labour and Conservatives would only win them about 25 seats. That they'd have to swing about 12-13% against both to win enough seats to be a major power. Extremely unlikely unfortunately.

As people have already said, due to the lovely way our electoral system works, it is highly unlikely

As much as I would love the LibDems to come second and relegate Labour to third place, I think it's unlikely.

Clegg's poll boost will settle down, probably to slightly above previous levels, but I wouldn't expect it to be sufficient to overtake either of the two main parties. Certainly it won't be the level of support suggested by today's tracker. Even if it were they'd still be third in parliament.

Clegg also won't be given as easy a time in the next two debates.

So many people say they favour what the Lib Dems have to say, so VOTE FOR THEM!!! If everyone who liked them actually voted for them, they'd have a good chance. Voting for another party is pointless if you're not really supporting them and just choosing to vote for someone who 'stands a chance.'
We're given the vote so we can have a say over what happens in parliament; so vote for the party you think best reflects your views. Forget popularity or the past successes of other parties being elected, if you like the Lib Dems, make it known.

There chances have increased a ton thanks to the awesome performance by Mr Clegg on the debate, however I don't think it was quite enough for them to win the election. At best they may come second but the only scenario for that would be if the Tories came first after Mr Brown fell into a coma on the next debate

I'm still voting for them and I encourage everyone else to do so to.

They'd need a swing of 16% from last election to pull it off. Seeing as that would be the biggest nationwide swing in history to my knowledge, I think we can say pretty damn conclusively it won't happen: only the 1997 general election had a national swing of more than 10%, since 1945, don't know about before that, and the 1997 swing was just barely over 10%

Edit: Before anyone says, that's not to say don't vote for them, just don't keep your hopes up about them winning. I'm all for more Lib Dem seats, but holding out for a win is only gonna end in tears
