I have a question -
I'll be staying in the Village (C-B). I plan to have 2 PC systems with me, one will be a desktop, another will be a laptop. I've read that all devices must be registered separately, and a router can't be used (due to the NAT function). Typical Hubs/Switches don't really exist anymore - but most home routers are able to switch off the NAT function and act as a switch. Is this allowed?

If not, I was wondering if there are enough network ports to plug in both the desktop and the laptop simultaneously?

I'm going to be honest with you here and tell you I'm not sure! Your best bet is to contact the IT Deprtment in the library and ask them. They deal with all the networking in the residences.

I can let you know that there is only one port in the room though. You need to plug into "data" not "voice" - the voice socket doesn't do anything.

They've only been sending the accommodation offers out for 2 days, I imagine it'll take the rest of the week at least yet. Patience. :yep:

Haha well nobody's perfect
And haha I'm the opposite to you in that respect. It's really bad, but I turn everything into a competition. Competitions that I have to win, as I'm a perfectionist too :p:
And haha I could use charm, or I could get them really drunk and then wait for them to pass out :colone:
And yup, it's ridiculous the amount of random/useless information I know....

I know, in a way it's good, as I can't wait to be there, but I still have a lot to sort out, which makes it bad. But tbh I'm not a drinker anyway, so I'm not sure 2 weeks of freshers is actually a good thing :dontknow: Well you pay weekly, so I just have to pay for a few more weeks where it overruns. I think the longest year is about 42 weeks, but I'm not sure if that involves easter/xmas holidays etc, so I'll just have to see when I get to that year. So it does make accommodation slughtly more expensive, but I shall live with that to study medicine :p:

Yeah it's quite exciting, but I'm slighlt yworried too. Cause I arrive earlier in my accommodation, it will probably just be me and one other medic there, so I best hope I get on with them (and I'm not the best at initiating conversations/small talk) so we shall see

I love crossing things off lists. Although then they look messy which annoys me (what with me being a perfectionist and hating things messy) so I usually end up re-writing them omitting the things I've already done...

I only get competitive come pub quizzes- then I must win ( or team) come fire or brimestone, and training on drunk and dissorderly will only come in handy for weekend A&E shifts.

I'm sure freshers week x2 will be a good thing- get to meet far more people and a chance to get on better with the people who will be going through hell together. Have to admit that I feel bad I laughed when you said 42 weeks of studying

The process of initiating conversations will probably end up failing spectacularly but at least there is now something to chat about- I remember someone suggesting taking a traffic cone , guess it works a treat.

Am also looking forward to late night fire alarms, I'm sure standing around in the cold with little clothing provides another chance to socialise

We have a pub quiz on medics fresher week.....if only you could be on my team for that :p: But I get competitive at everything. Like I will have to beat people going up and down stairs. And they won't even know anything about it, just in my head I have to beat them.....I have issues :s-smilie: :p:

Oh but I don't drink myself, so I shall be completely sober for all procedures :colone: And haha yes well thinking about it I'm almost positive that does include holidays  I feel silly now, thanks :p:

And yeah.....I don't really want a traffic cone in my room. Besides, the conversation will be:

Them: Why do you have a traffic cone in your room?
Me: As a conversation starter
Them: Okay
Me: .........
Them: ..........

Even a traffic cone will probably fail

And I do not like late night fire alarms  I do not like having my sleep disturbed :p:

Thanks, I know I'm being imaptient but I can't help it! It doesn't help that one of my friends has already been allocated constable, and I can't help feeling I may have missed out...fingers crossed I hear today!

Ha, I can understand the feeling :p: I got my offer a few weeks ago due to being a gap year-er, but I don't doubt I would be the same if I didn't already have it! Hope you get your first choice though, I'm sure you'll hear soon :yep:

Does anyone know if there are locks on the doors to our individual rooms or just our flats as a whole? I'm sure everyone will be great and noone actually would take anything, it's just i'm taking a laptop and I'm a bit apprehensive about just leaving it in my room? Maybe I'm worrying for nothing but you know. I'd be so devastated if anything got taken as I in no way would have the money to replace it ://

I'm pretty sure that the individual rooms have locks on....I think I read it somewhere..? I'm sure it says somewhere on the UEA website anyway

Yes, your individual rooms have locks on. We recommend that you lock your door every time you leave the room so as to keep it secure. Remember to think you may trust your flatmates but do you trust all their friends as well?

On a more positive note if the worst does happen and something gets taken from your room every single student in our residences has insurance included as standard with their room. You will get details of this when you arrive with your licence and keys. Basically what happens is that we add £6 to your rent and that covers you for the whole year. The reason its so cheap is that every student has to have it.

Is that the same with the village? So will only larch/beech/yew etc be evacuated rather than the whole building? Cause aren't the village buildings closer together?

As coolh5000 said, they seemed to go off separately. However, I was in courtyard A and I wasn't there for a single accidental set of all year either. Admittedly, I stayed at my boyfriend's a fair bit, but still, we only had the tests on tuesdays when I was there, which you don't have to evacuate for since they only last about 2 seconds!

Either way, it can't compare to campus where I know friends who had like 9 successive alarms at 4am on a wednesday after the LCR. Some people have said they can be fun and they look back fondly on them though, so it's not THAT bad.

Agreed! I locked mine all the time, even when just popping to the kitchen. Sometimes people feel rude shutting the main door in someone's face, or smokers will leave the catch on, so it's possible for someone to get in to the buildings in the village at least. If someone see's us in the kitchen, they may decide to come and raid our rooms and it would be easy not to notice, so I always play it safe.

Luckily I got a free ben and jerry's lanyard at freshers fair so it was easy to carry my keys everywhere.

I know someone who was living in halls (not UEA, but still) last year, and had their laptop and various other items stolen from their room.. while they were in the kitchen for no more than 5 minutes :s-smilie: incentive enough for me to lock my door behind me, no matter how long you're going to be out of the room.

Not long now. It will be by the end of this week. Sorry about the delay in getting these out to you Nursing students who start here soon. I can assure you that there is nothing to be concerned about, rooms are being booked for you by one of my collegues as I type this!

Ok thank you!.....Bit of a cheeky question but do you know if most of us have got our first choices?
Quite a fair few apparently. I can't (and won't!) be any clearer than that right now.
