Mechanical Eng - BEng + MSc or MEng?
I was initially thinking of doing a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and then doing a MSc in either Aeronautical Engineering or Petroleum Engineering, as this would leave me with significantly more time to think about what type of Engineering I wish to go into.

Will I be at an disadvantage to those doing an MEng in either MechE, AeroE or PetE? (Excuse the abbreviations)

MEng graduates are more desirable than BEng ones; a student with an MEng in mechanical engineering would be more likely to get hired than someone with only a BEng. Once you get the MSc then it matters less but many companies will fund their BEng graduates through an MSc.
