QMUL, RHUL, Nottingham or Kings for History?
Hello, I was wondering if I could get some opinions from current students about the History courses at the said universities.
My application to Durham was unsuccessful and I thought I knew where would be my firm if this happened, but now it has I'm a little stuck. (I'm still waiting on Kings to get back to me also, but I thought I might as well ask about it anyway.) And RHUL will definitely be my Insurance choice.
I love the look of the course at Notts, the modules look great, but I know the university hasn't got the reputation of the London universities. QMUL doesn't give much info on the course, but from what it does give it looks okay. I'd just like some feedback on what current students think of the courses.
Also, after being to Durham and some London unis I wasn't sure if I was suited to London life (comparatively anyway) but I haven't been to Kings, I hear that's in a better area than QMUL. And I have a visit day coming up for Notts and RHUL and I think I'd like the campuses and stuff for those. What's the student life like at each of the four unis?
Any help/feedback would be appreciated! -

Re: QMUL, RHUL, Nottingham or Kings for History? The main thing to do is to look carefully at the course structure and content. How much choice do you get and when? Do they cover the periods of history that particularly interest you? Try and get hold of a copy of the current undergrad year 1 handbook - you can often find these on the uni websites - as that can be really informative.(Original post by lyndsayy)

Re: QMUL, RHUL, Nottingham or Kings for History?I'd choose King's and Notts over QMUL and RHUL personally. And I've studied at one, and know people at the other three.(Original post by lyndsayy)

Location wise, QMUL is at Mile End, so the east end of London, not particularly nice but the campus is pretty good. King's History department is on the Strand so pretty much in walking distance of everything you could want. I've not been to Notts but friend loved it. It's a pretty well known department academically wise too. QMUL have also scored big time just recently with Amanda Vickery taking up a post there and if you're at all interested in Georgian history, history of the home, women in the 18th century, you couldn't study under someone better. King's is probably the most traditional of the 4 course wise and widely respected. Ludmilla Jordanova is there which is no bad thing either. Also, don't forget the beauty of doing inter-collegiate modules when you're in London.
I found RHUL really tough resources wise, and compared to the other 3 has the worst library/resources. Location wise, if you're after a busier city type, then avoid Egham. It's a slow commuter town with the station being one of the few pluses. The campus is gorgeous, just shame about its location...Last edited by apotoftea; 06-02-2011 at 21:19. -
Re: QMUL, RHUL, Nottingham or Kings for History?
Yeahh, I went to QMUL and I like the Campus

I just felt intimidated a little by London, but I know I could cope once I got settled. I'm just constantly comaring everywhere to Durham, which I do need to stop doing.
Hmm, well I've absolutely loved doing about Russia from 1881-1953 and anything post 1800 really.
I'd like to learn more about the older periods though too, especially going right back to the beginning of the Romanov rule.
And after seeing bits of 'A History of Ancient Britain' I'd love to learn more about the really early stuff.
I'm quite open to all periods but so far my favourite has been the more modern stuff, but that might be to do with the fact that it's all we've studied since year 9. -
Re: QMUL, RHUL, Nottingham or Kings for History?Yeah the campus is a fantastic place and the reason I opted to come here in the first place was that the uni seemed really ambitious, reflected in its rising place in the league tables and hopefully by the opening of the much delayed s****y new history block next year!(Original post by lyndsayy)

Ahh well that sounds quite an eclectic mix! In terms of Russia, here it's done by a bloke called Dr Jon Smele and by all accounts he's a good guy who knows his stuff! Can't say I'm into the Russian stuff myself...
I'm quite a modern, British kind of guy and I've loved absolutely everything I've done in this field here so far. I'm also of the impression that the medieval history here is quite good, but the range isn't fantastically extensive! I've got a second year module selection booklet somewhere if you wanted to take a gander at it? -
Re: QMUL, RHUL, Nottingham or Kings for History?Run with the King's if anything! (i must confess, i shall forever bitterly resent getting the knock back from them!)(Original post by aarora)
My friend's doing history at Nottingham...is fantastic and really interesting. I think you should go to either Nottingham or King's

London's a great one to study in, especially with the inter-collegiate modules. -

I'm a little stuck now, the reason Holloway is my back up is that they haven't specified that, out of AAB, I have to have an A in history. Would it be best to contact them to see if i do actually need an A or if I'll be accepted with the B? :/ -

Re: QMUL, RHUL, Nottingham or Kings for History? If your offer does not specify a grade for history, then you don't have to get the A. Unless they amend your offer (and technically they can do that, up until the point you have accepted it as your firm or insurance) you would be guaranteed a place provided you have at least a B in history and AA in your other subjects.(Original post by lyndsayy)
