Have **** loads of pain killers and throat stuff.

I think I might have to give freshers flu a miss- I already suffer from M.E so I'd probably be dead by the end of that lol! But thanks for the advice.

Not possible. You've got thousands of students flying to the same place from all corners of the globe crammed into lecture theatres and halls.

You're gunna get ill. The first few weeks you'll struggle to hear the lecturer over the coughs and sniffles.

Blu-tack. Bottle opener. Laundry rack. Tea towel. Coathangers, and lots of them (I used them to dry things on; saves ironing). Don't rush into sorting out second-year houses, but do start thinking about who you'd like to live with early. If you're staying in to catch up on sleep while your flatmates go out, go to bed really early and get a few hours' sleep before they get back and wake you up.

Go to every event. For me I was a bit apprehensive spending that much money, but it really is a very different state of affairs to the rest of the year. Like you'll do stuff throughout the year, and you'll likely enjoy them more, but Freshers is invented for spending literally hundreds on alcohol, tickets and pizza. Don't regret it.

Also you don't have to do club nights every night. I went to a jazz night with a flatmate, and I thought my flatmates would think us weird but they didn't really bat an eyelid, and it was my favourite night!

Easy sex if you're up for that. To be honest your flatmates will think you a hero, so you might as well.

Oh, and make sure you actually know what you're supposed to be doing and when. I had tonnes of registering for absolute rubbish. One was a medical thing and I was in a seven hour queue for it (machines were down), so bring food maybe? I dunno, really just go with the flow, you can't plan too much because it's so fast-moving.

Finally if you're short on conversation, mock people's accents. God knows why, but it's all my flatmates did during intro week (I don't even have an accent). And pointing out how awkward the whole situation is kinda works, where people come from, their course, etc. I know it's all chiché and cringey to do it again and again with dozens of people you won't remember in an hour, but it's worth it.

Don't base friendships around alcohol and insecurities, rather seek the best friends you can find from shared interest societies so you can encourage each other.

First, get on talking terms with your flatmates (even if you can't stand them), as it saves awkward silences in the kitchen/hall/bathroom queue, and small talk at the start is better than your only communication being knocking on their door halfway through the year asking for a tin opener.

Secondly, don't just limit yourself to being mates with your flatmates, your colleagues in your academic department are likely to be your closest mates beyond the second year (speaking from experience).

As for freshers 'flu, you will get it in some form, a mix of being surrounded be people with unfamiliar bugs and overdoing it a bit during freshers fair, you'll be fine just take it easy for a few days once the antics of freshers week are out of the way.

Finally, and most importantly, as geeky/sad/unstudenty as it sounds, try and go to your lectures, lab sessions, seminars, etc., as said above while first year doesn't count for anything, it'll make life a lot easier in the upper years. Going to a lecture hungover is better than not going to the lecture at all.

Stop imagining what it's going to be like right now, because it will be totally different.

I never got freshers' flu :s-smilie: (although maybe it's hard to tell because I had a cold before even starting uni, and so was ill with that for the most of freshers' week :p:).

OP: I would say, pick up at least 1 society or sport, just socialise with as many people as possible, even if it's just seeing a group of people on a night out, join them - remember you're all new and all wanting to meet new people, nobody will care, in fact, if you turn out to be a fun person, they'll be happy of it. I kind of locked myself in my room and yes, I got amazing grades, and yes, half of my modules were for students in their second or even final year of uni, but I regret it. I wish I'd had a bit more fun and made more of an effort to make friends. Also remember: don't "cling" on to one group i.e. your flatmates, remember it might turn out that your real friends are those in your course or in your sport/societies as these are the people who you share a real common interest in, so no worries after freshers' week and you still feel like you don't have a proper group, because you'll have plenty of time.
