work experience summer placement engineering L@@K!!
hi, im in y12 and currently looking for some summer work experience relative to engineering. i was was wondering what companies i should look at - this is mainly for uni application, but also just for the enjoyment of the experience.

i am really struck down the middle between mechanical and civil courses, so maybe a work experience placement can help me decide on this.

i am looking for any span of the summer holidays (1 to 4 weeks long) and am really wanting to go abroad but also anywhere in the london area.

i would appreciate if anyone could drop some names of some companies that would be useful or where to look.

    thanks, tom

Work experience won't help your uni applicant. At your age you won't get anything interesting or relevant to what a university engineering course would entail. It's still a worthwhile experience, though, and if you can get anything I'd definitely recommend it.

Check out company's websites, send CVs, etc.

Work experience does very little to add to an engineering PS from what I gathered from talking to admissions tutors (and also my own experience of doing no work placements but getting offers from 4 top 15 engineering universities). All you have to do is show an interest in the world of engineering, something you will probably lose if you shadow a machinist for 4 hours a day for a week.

When writing my personal statement I attended a day of debates, one of which was based on the future of engineering and it's role in the world; which I genuinely found extremely interesting and stimulating. It's things like that which show a genuine interest in the concept of the engineering world that admissions tutors like to see.

Hi, I am a civil engineering student and i think i might be just the right person for you :P
this summer I have been picked by my college for an internship (for the second time in a row :P) at the construction site of the biggest hospital in the middle east!
Do not listen to what people above me have said, Internships and work experience help you a lot if you are applying to the US or Canada.
being an intern is nothing like shadowing a machinist for 4 hours a day.. being an intern at a good construction site involves amazing site inspections ( where you get all the knowledge you need to get straight A's in your courses especially in your first 2 years) , attending meetings between engineers, attending presentations where everyone talks about different subjects concerning the company or the engineering world. discovering new things about construction itself everyday etc, etc.
of course, not everything is rainbows and butterflies.. there will be times where all you will have to do is reading 500 page plans of stuff you won't understand at all, or trying to read through contracts that don't actually make sense to you or even having to prepare a presentation to present in front of the project manager of the company to show them what you know, but hey, this is life and helps you grow up. again, if you are going to canada or the states, work experience does help in your application (although maybe not as much as school subjects themselves) and will definitely help you pass the courses with sky high grades as you will understand everything that is given to you thanks to the practical work you have done. 1 out of 3 students makes it through the first year in UofT , Mcgill or Queen's. if you want to be that one student, then work experience will be a big step towards success in what you are pursuing!
