How many hours a week do you work, when also studying? What is reasonable?
Students who have a part-time job, how many hours do you find you can comfortably do, fitting in well with study? When does it become a struggle?
Could you survive without working?
Obviously everyone's different, but would like to hear a range of opinions...please can you mention what course/ how many hours you're in uni as well

I felt working was good to get experience and sometimes it is a struggle becuase of deadlines and missing lectures or classes, but its a good experience and extra money is always good.

I work between 12 and 18 and it's ok, but worked double that when I was doing Highers and wasn't ok at all, had to quit one job a few months before exams. I'd still work even if I didn't have to, even if it lets you get a first, it still looks bad leaving uni with no work experience whatsoever, but I'd love to depend less on the money...

Re: How many hours a week do you work, when also studying? What is reasonable?
I work about 20 hours a week, normally one or two evenings and the weekend in a restaurant bar. I have done this throughout my second year and the only time it was a struggle was when I did my 8 week teaching placement, where I was at school 5 days a week and then working the other two days - It did kill me but I couldn't afford not to work really.
You have to be organised enough to be able to fit in work, uni and assignments as well as a social life, its all about getting that balance. -

Re: How many hours a week do you work, when also studying? What is reasonable?
Is it possible to get many part time jobs that would only be about 10 hours a week? I could do with a bit of a financial boost though not a huge amount and I'm not sure if most places give you a fixed amount of hours, or you can just say what you're happy with.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I honestly have no idea how part time jobs work

Yes you can, most high street part time shop jobs start you off on 4, 8 or 12 hour contracts(Original post by dirtyoldriver)

Re: How many hours a week do you work, when also studying? What is reasonable?Yessss, if you get a part-time job - they'll give you a contract, which states how many hours per week you have to work for you to keep your job.(Original post by dirtyoldriver)

Mine is 8 hours, but I know people who have the same job as me who are contracted 4/12 or even 16 hours a week.
As well as your minimum working hours stated in your contract, you can also get overtime - which are extra shifts that you get paid for
.
Many people who are contracted to do say, 4 hours per week, can actually work way more every single week
.
You agree your contract when you accept your job offer. -

Re: How many hours a week do you work, when also studying? What is reasonable?
If you can avoid working, definitely do. In first and second year it's not so much of a concern, but come third year you'll definitely want to focus just on your studies. The work load steps up a fair bit, especially with the dissertation, and everyone takes the year far more seriously.
In third year I'll have 23 timetabled hours and intend to spend 20 hours a week self-studying to keep on top of all the work and ensure I can do as best I can. (Admittedly only 10 of the 23 hours are properly timetabled for me, but I'm attending other lectures that I know will be invaluable for me going onto a masters course.)
