Re: Heriot Watt University?Wow! Congratulations!(Original post by Mr Dangermouse)
It was rated 4th in the UK by the times this year. Obviously that's an outlier, but still it's a very good economic school.
I actually just got my economics unconditional from HW an hour ago!
Im thinking about doing economics at university but I REALLY dont want to do a course that is maths based! That would just be a nightmare :| Did you take maths to A2? Is it necessary to have maths at A2 to do economics at uni? -
Re: Heriot Watt University?I don't think HW specify maths, and I'm doing Scottish advanced higher as opposed to A2.(Original post by TanishaBellum)

Re: Heriot Watt University?Haha , 4th ? It was for student feedback NOT best in UK . They are not even in the top 30 in the UK for economics , stop lying to each other . That table was even deleted for misinformation by the Times ...(Original post by Mr Dangermouse)

Just proves what a complete joke they are to be honest! UCL, Nottingham and Bristol aren't even in the top 10

Re: Heriot Watt University?Oh yeah not denying it's good but that league table is beyond a joke!(Original post by Mr Dangermouse)
Aye, no denying it's an outlier, but I'd definitely say top 20 is fair enough. -
Re: Heriot Watt University?Respected ? Where ? Not in England for sure , i know fairly below average guys in my year who got into that course one with BBC and the other BBB without even Maths and you tell me its a top school ? I suspect some idiot who has a love of that uni or was on their payroll did those tables and of course got some reward from HW economics department for advertising them . That was a joke , i second Tateco's point !!(Original post by Mr Dangermouse)
It's particularly well respected within industry. -
Re: Heriot Watt University?I'm giving you both halves of Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Nottingham, Kent, Manchester, Warwick, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Glasgow, Bristol etc. Can't think of 20 that beat Heriot-Watt. It's a very improved institution.(Original post by Tateco)

Re: Heriot Watt University?I didn't say it wasn't in the top 20, just that it's clearly not 4th, you haven't even considered the likes of Bath, Durham, York, Southampton, Birmingham and Exeter.(Original post by Mr Dangermouse)

Re: Heriot Watt University?
Firstly, I think we need to emphasise the fact that HW is a Scottish university and this means their programme is four years long. In Scotland they take four years to cover the same content as one would in England on a three year course. This is because in Scotland they start at what's roughly equivalent to A2 given most Scottish students start university with Highers (AS-Level) and not Advanced Highers (A2).
In first year at HW you cover mathematical methods and statistical methods equivalent to those found in A-Level Maths. In second year you do more mathematics and statistics modules covering the sort of content you would in a first year English degree.
In third year at HW (equivalent to second year in England) you cover econometrics and do another mathematical methods module.
Obviously I'm not saying that HW is as mathematically rigorous as the top ten in England, or probably even the top 20, but it's not like you'll be only doing essays either.
Additionally, people from HW do go onto do postgraduate programmes in Economics and into quantitative career roles such as actuarial. -
Re: Heriot Watt University?Bearing in mind as well that well qualified English students can generally start in second year, and that the requirements to do so are higher than to enter in first year. E.g. in economics first year entry requires a minimum of BBB at A level, 2nd year entry requires ABB in relevant subjects.(Original post by .ACS.)

Re: Heriot Watt University?I have heard an MA at f.ex. HW in Scotland is alot less mathematical than f.ex. a BSc at Birmingham.(Original post by .ACS.)

Will ofcourse be maths, but not a-level maths directly, maybe as-level u need (Anyway a-level maths is not required) and last but not least it is a 4 year course so it starts with a bit of repetition in the first year and continues step by step so you will be fine I think!) -
Re: Heriot Watt University?
If I ain't wrong it isn't such a difference between a BA and an MA
