Re: Why have house rents gone up so much?Mine hasnt and it looks like its also staying the same next year, Just from chatting to people (im living in college next year) I dont get the impression there has been a drastic increase. As has been said more landlords have move to bills inc.

Re: Why have house rents gone up so much?Private landlords (and the university) are greedy gits. Elvet and the Viaduct have always been overpriced and overrated any way. Gilesgate and Neville's Cross offer better value for money (plus Claypath to a certain extent). People say they are too far out. Claypath certainly isn't, Gilesgate can be as close to Old and New Elvet as the Viaduct and Neville's Cross is closer to science departrments, hill colleges, SGIA and the business school.

Re: Why have house rents gone up so much?There are loads listed on Student Pad. But I regret not starting my house searching earlier last academic year. I was only looking for a house for myself and didn't start until January (partly because the DSU discourages landlords and agents from advertising before Christmas, so I knew plenty of new properties would turn up after Christmas, and because I was almost certain I was going for a flat in Crossgate only for that to not work out). Finding a six bedroom house should be easier than a one bedroom, trust me!(Original post by alexcs)

Contrary to popular opinion im convinced it is this and not freshers which drives the pre christmas rush(Original post by alexcs)

I remember last year having a terrible time finding a place and around 60% of the properties I enquired about were unavailable despite still being listed, though at least I was only days late and not months. But they were still loads listed and I'd be surpised if some of the houses around Gilesgate were taken. Glad it's been sorted though.(Original post by alexcs)

I've cited freshers as the reason DSU gave, but I remain unconvinced that it's any single group. Freshers are still settling into university life, getting to grips with their course, too busy socialising. Getting accomodation would be the last thing on my mind, especially as it seems that next year is so far away (did for me anyway, all those years ago).(Original post by Quagers)

Re: Why have house rents gone up so much?I started house-hunting in early November possibly, can't quite recall. All the 2nd & 3rd years told us freshers to wait till December or later; but when the estate agents started putting signs up on houses that caused abit of a rush. Once one person starts everyone else thinks they need to jump in there. It's a bit of a self-perpetuating myth: if you tell people houses are going earlier, people will rush to get them earlier, causing them to then go earlier.(Original post by River85)
