    History v. Physics for Medicine
    Dear all,
I am in the process of deciding which A levels to study and had previously decided on Further Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, perhaps doing Further Maths only for AS level. I recently attended a course overview of History and it seemed really interesting and I thought that it would help me in analytical work in the future as it teaches you how to express your ideas as well. Physics on the other hand is very important in Medicine nowadays however I don't know how much universities like it. Which do you think would be a better option in terms of performance and getting into a good university like Cambridge or Imperial and why would it be better?
    Thanks
    Sid

They are both well respected, traditional, academic subjects. I would say it doesn't really matter which one you choose, just choose the subject you will enjoy most as this is the one you're likely to do well in. On TSR, there are people who have got into Cambridge Medicine with 2 sciences, Maths and History, and others with all 3 sciences and Maths.

I do History and really enjoy it, and Universities do like it. In terms of performance I can't say anything as I don't know where your strengths lie.

As everyone has said choose what you think you will enjoy most/be best at (whatever you value more).

If you want to apply to Cambridge physics may be slightly more beneficial as the knowledge and skills you learn are useful for the BMAT and the interview (I got asked a physics question at my medicine interview at Peterhouse, Cambridge). Statistically I think it is about 98% of applicants admitted to Cambridge for medicine have three sciences (maths counts as a science). But this is just a statistic and doesn't mean you can't get in otherwise. It may just be because the course style is very scientific, therefore understandably the ones who like science and have studied all of them apply. All other universities do not require physics or maths, a common misconception by many. Oh and places like UCL state they like a contrasting subject, such as history, but again you can still get in with all sciences. Imperial don't care although they also use the BMAT, as do UCL for that matter.

I realise you may like Imperial and Cambridge for whatever reasons other than 'prestige' but I guess I should reiterate that all medical schools are equally good.

I think having a written subject will be good tbh. Shows you have the skills you will need while you're studying medicine.
