Temperature wise, it's going to be a fair bit colder in Newcastle, but only by 5 degrees on average a year I think, if you are interested in that side of things lol.
In terms of university prestige, both are excellent universities, there's no question there. Personally, I'd say Southampton edges it, but you really shouldn't use prestige as a factor for your decision. I would however suggest you look at the course structure and see if you like both, check topics and what not
As both are large cities, there will be lots to do. Clubbing, shopping, visiting things and both have generally good student satisfaction ratings. I think Newcastle has more in the way of international students from the Asian continent if that's a factor for you? But don't quote me on that, I just know they have lots of Chinese students. I would however say Southampton, whilst lovely, is fairly small. Newcastle is also compact, but there's plenty going on in a small area
It apparently has the best nightlife for an UK university, so if nightlife is important, I'd certainly choose N'cle, Southampton hasn't got too much, mainly a large Oceana nightclub.
However, for sports, it all depends on what kind of sports? If it's indoors like Table Tennis, football, hockey, basketball that you're in then either university will provide good facilities for sport
A bonus of going to southampton would be if you are very interested in sailing, canoeing and other general watersports, i think So'ton is the best in the UK for water sports.
anyway, hope I've helped good luck! oh and if you want to go to london a fair bit, then also choose southampton, it's only an hour on the train and would cost about 20 GBP for a return to Waterloo, if visiting sites is more your thing. But you probably wouldn't go much
