UOM Open House Accommodation 2012 - photos and opinions!

Hello,

let's use this thread to share photos and opinions of the residences people saw at the open house accommodation day.

Below is a link to the photos I took during some of my tours. In time I'll probably also add some of my own photos from my room in Oak House (and if they don't materialise then just look through my old posts and find them on here).

Enjoy!

Wright Robinson was a big bedroom (although I'm not sure if I was looking at a 'super single' or 'standard' room) but then I really think Fallowfield is the best place for first years. The tour guide said that Wright Robinson has the highest number of return students as everyone likes it so much, and I can see why!

EDIT:

I seem to have found a secret website!

By the way, the bedroom and kitchen pictures are the wrong way round with Grosvenor Place and Grosvenor Street - Grosvenor Street has the nicer facilities.

These are photos from the internet but I can confirm that they look like the rooms I've visited friends/had tours in:

Richmond Park, Fallowfield:

The dark grey bit behind the headboard is where the wardrobe and ensuite are. And behind the cameraperson in the kitchen picture is a carpeted living area with a dining table.

Sheavyn House, Fallowfield:

Again, behind the camera person is a carpeted living area with dining table. The living area is slightly bigger than Richmond.

Oak House, Fallowfield (my flat):

Good sized living area (same size as Sheavyn). Room sizes seem to vary in Oak House. I have the smallest room in the flat and mine's a nice size.

they all say invalid attachment :frown: :frown: :frown:

Links don't work :colone: Is Wright Robinson full of internationals?
I liked Sheavyn House, Canterbury Court, Richmond Park and Weston Hall, but got no photos, so thanks for this thread!

Do these links work for non-university students? Click on the links to see some promotional pictures of the accommodation.

YES! Those links work! Although the pictures are a bit old, a few of the halls have nice new kitchens that isn't shown on those

I live in Oak House now, I'm a first year. I'm looking at going back into halls for part of my second year however as I am studying abroad in my first semester.

Oak House is really good and I've uploaded photos onto the flickr link in my original post. The flat is eight people with four men on the bottom floor and four women on the top. Each floor has its own toilet, two sinks and shower (the top floor has a bath-shower) and we share a well-sized kitchen/living room on the bottom floor. The walls are mint green breezeblock and the coridoors are quite narrow and that seems to put people off. That, along with the lack of ensuite (which you really don't need - I'm deliberating looking for shared bathroom halls for next year!). The rooms vary in size (two of the rooms in the flat are strangely huge) and I have the smallest room in the flat and I have enough space and storage space, I think it's cosy. The kitchen/living and bathroom areas are cleaned one-two times weekly and we also have our toilet roll topped up and sanitary waste taken out regularly.

Oak House is the closest hall to Sainsbury's and right in the centre of Fallowfield. You have the Armitage sport centre a minute walk away and security on site is excellent. I primarily chose Oak House because it was the cheapest option. I have so much money left over from my loan which I could live off if I didn't get food money each week. Oak House is very good for socialising as you tend to get more of the party animals here than in the quieter ensuite halls. However, not being a party animal myself, I've found similar people to myself, I can still do work here and enjoy myself a lot.

I really like Oak House and I think it's very good for first years, I'd definitely recommend it. I am however looking at halls closer to campus for next year as I'd like to be able to walk to university (from Fallowfield it's a 15-25 minute walk depending on your speed). I'm looking primarily at city centre halls with typically high numbers of international students as I'd like to be in a more studious environment than Fallowfield!

Your choices are very popular choices. They're all nice residences... I'm not sure what you're asking.

I'll go home during the summer.

You can purchase for the entire year, or for the academic year. In your case, if you are not returning home during the summer, you will need to pay for 52 weeks, rather than 41 weeks

I think undergraduate contracts last no more than 40 weeks but you can opt to stay in halls over the summer for between £13-£15 per night. The 51 week contracts are for postgraduates who need to be at uni for almost the whole year.

I maybe wrong though.

Oh I know, and the accommodation website is useless. Search for other halls on flickr - that's where I managed to find a lot of my Oak House photos before I moved in. Also, search the halls' names on facebook to find groups and photos! The Burkhardt House photos on my flickr come from a facebook page.

Check out the links I've posted a few posts above to see some slightly crappy, yet still very useful photos taken by the university

Hmm.. i'm still having trouble deciding where to go.

I was originally thinking about Fallowfield, but I've now changed my mind. I've decided I just want to concentrate on studying, so I want to be close to the university and be in more quiet accommodation. I'm not fussed about en-suite or shared bathrooms.

Do you have any opinions on what the best city accommodation is?

Grosvenor Place/Bowden Court/Grosvenor Street Building are all shared bathroom, right next the the main campus (mostly non-science students). Whitworth Park (shared bathroom) is also right on campus just up from the library.

I really liked Burkhardt hall, It's under 10 minutes from the main campus above Whitworth Park (the actual park, not the halls - confusing). It's near enough to the university to walk easily but right on the edge of Rusholme 'curry mile' which is good. That is self catered, ensuite, and shares a pretty campus with the catered Hulme Hall.

Wright Robinson looked really nice too and is on north campus (science) right next to Piccadilly station. The tour guide said that WR was the most popular for returning students, so it must be nice

And those hall wre the only accommodation I looked at in city/close to uni area. Have a look for the accommodation closest to your campus here: (http://documents.manchester.ac.uk/display.aspx?DocID=6353) and do some research into them.

You've given me a lot to think about.

Hi
I'm applying for accommodation next year and am definitely going for Fallowfield. Does anyone know if Ashburne Hall is single sex? It doesn't make it clear the website (which is useless) and I definitely do NOT want to go if there's a possibility of single sex flats.
Also, what do people think about Owens Park, Allen Hall and Woolton Hall?
