Best party/social unis?

Basically although i do want a degree i'm far more interested by the social side of uni - meeting people, gaining new interests etc.

I've applied to Aberwystwth, Portsmouth, Oxford Brookes & York St John (the latter 2 are unlikely as i just don't think they're really 'me'), but i'm not concerned about going through clearing to find a uni. I have BBB - on a gap year you see - and want to study American Studies or History.

I'm looking to form a punk-rock band when i get to uni and am also looking for a potential semester or year over in the States, so can anyone suggest potential unis that have a rather 'american esque' feel to them? I don't really know how to put it any other way than that.

This. You go to uni to be educated as well as for the social life, not just for the latter.

I am not sure about the best social/party unis, cos I think each person will say that their uni is the best from their personal experiences. Predictably I am going to say that the University of Liverpool has a great social life. there are so many bars, clubs, alternative venues, student venues in town which cater for all people and interests. I sound like a travel brochure. There are so many student bars and clubs and the alcohol is really cheap and all the bars and clubs are relatively near eachother and to the on campus halls. Liverpool is supposed to have one of the best night life outside of London and definitely one of the best in the north. people will say london has the best social life which may be true but prices of alcohol are much more expensive. From speaking to friends at uni in London many don't go out nearly as much as out of london uni students because they just can't afford to. here in liverpool cos it's much smaller than London you get a really good city/campus mix at uni and everything is really close by too. there are so many socials, society nights out, course nights out where you can meet people at fresher's and socialise and some of my friends go out as much as 3/4 times a week. if you like to go out there is plenty of opportunities to do so here at Liverpool and you won't get bored.

Sheffield is brilliant, it's a big enough city for stuff to do but everything is compact and it's so easy to get around, plus it's cheap. The night life is good and the city is probably one of the most student orientated ones about.

It's how you define 'social life', though...I go to a university with very little nightlife in the surrounding area, so most students here have to rely on what campus has to offer (which is pretty poor in comparison to larger universities). However, from my experiences, the social life is great- I go out often and I've made some wonderful friends.

I guess the point I'm getting at is that the majority of universities will allow you to meet new people and have new experiences. It's just how you want to meet those new people and gain those new experiences that will differ- so, through clubbing, or forming your punk rock band, or joining societies, or playing sports, whatever takes your fancy. Some universities will have a better clubbing scene, others will have loads of societies...

Sorry if I've misinterpreted your question, but I'm making more of a general statement than anything. In short, I don't think there IS a university with 'poor social life', if you're willing to put yourself out there!

No i totally see your point, its more what you make of it than where you actually go. Of course i'm bothered about the educational side of things (for 9k a year who wouldn't be?) but as my unis are near enough the same in that department, it's more about how i'll best fit in that i'm concerned about.

My friend who lives in London says the night life's great BUT its so diverse that you aren't really with students, whereas one of my friends who goes to Aber says its awesome because everyone's together in the clubs, rather than with a load of 40 year olds, so i guess that proves your point.

I'm going there myself so I'm a little (a lot) biased, but have had nights out there and every night has been awesome, and there's plenty of musician-types there :smile:
