KCL 2012 History/War Studies Applicants/Offer Holders
Hey you guys out there!
I was wondering whether any of you applied for War Studies and/or History for 2012 entry and whether you already heard back from them.
I got an unconditional offer a couple of days ago and now want to use this for stalking purposes (you know ... intelligence and stuff).
Hope to hear back from many of you!!

I got a conditional one about a month ago, but haven't firmed it yet - can't decide between King's or Leeds.

Re: KCL 2012 History/War Studies Applicants/Offer HoldersGO FOR KINGS! Im a fresher doing war studies here - if it's your field of interest, you really want to be here. Kings is one of the best universities in the world, and for war studies it IS the best. The speakers they bring in for you are insane, and not only that the student night life is awesome. Why would you want to go to Leeds?!(Original post by Sam Gregory)

Re: KCL 2012 History/War Studies Applicants/Offer HoldersHello! Im trying to decide between Durham for IR and kcl for war studies. Can you tell me much about the course? Is there a lot of military history involved? And are the links with think tanks ect helpful? It sounds like my perfect course(Original post by Just-Alex)

Re: KCL 2012 History/War Studies Applicants/Offer HoldersIn the first year you do 3 modules all year, and 2 modules for a term each. The conduct of war module (all year) is mainly military history, battle formations, revolutions in military affairs etc - not my cup of tea tbh, but it's bearable. Causes of war (all year) can be related to pretty much any period you want it to be, whether that's 16th century warfare or present day Afghan warfare (unless you're in the cyberwar lecture of course!). Experience of war (all year) is insanely arbitrary, but there's not much military history involved, there's a lot on the Falklands and Afghanistan/Iraq. The Art of War Studies (1 term) is basically teaching you how to write, the only history there is CLAUSEWITZ MUST LEARN ALL OF CLAUSEWITZ BOOK 1 CHAPTER 1 KNOW IT WORD FOR WORD. In all seriousness Clausewitz is pretty important. The best module by far is Contemporary Security Issues - not only because the lecturer is AWESOME, but because it address so many current issues, and most of the lectures are based on the news from that week. It's fantastic! The links with think tanks etc - the phrase 'KCL War Studies' will open a LOT of doors for you - it's incredibly highly respected. Also the extra lectures put on by the department or by the KCL Think Tank are unlike those you'd get elsewhere - I spent an entire Tuesday evening in a lecture entitled 'War With Iran? What are the odds?'. Which was absolutely fascinating. Not only that but you're living in London, which is really convenient for the top places for think tanks (RUSI, Chatham House, IISS etc), and means you'll be able to fit any internships around your studies easily. Wow late night cant sleep rant! Any more questions, let me know(Original post by maxcartwright)

Re: KCL 2012 History/War Studies Applicants/Offer HoldersWow thanks!! The course sounds amazing, and exactly what I want to do. As you said the course is very well respected, are most of the students international? And do you have a lot of career talks ect, as one if my concerns is that it's quite a narrow degree to have, or maybe it isn't I don't know ?(Original post by Just-Alex)

) is it quite a small group?

Re: KCL 2012 History/War Studies Applicants/Offer Holders
I had the option to do Durham MSc Defense, Development, Diplomacy, but when I was accepted to King's for War Studies, it was a no brainer. King's seems like it is more focused on the conflict aspect of IR which is more interesting to me, and what they do, they do very well. Durham seems more specialized in the development and diplomacy aspect of things, so if that is your cup of tea, maybe Durham is right for you.
From what I hear though (and I am an international student from the US), the War Studies Department at King's is unmatched in the field in terms of reputation. -

Re: KCL 2012 History/War Studies Applicants/Offer HoldersHaha just realised - obvs have one for KCL as well..(Original post by catherine999)
I've had an offer from Birmingham to do War Studies, delighted obviously but can't decide whether to do BA History at Leeds instead - it's a great uni and the year abroad option is very tempting...

Re: KCL 2012 History/War Studies Applicants/Offer Holdersyou can do a year abroad at kcl as well, some of the places are fantastic!! I'm seriously aiming for georgetown(Original post by catherine999)

Re: KCL 2012 History/War Studies Applicants/Offer HoldersNo worries, sorry I didn't answer sooner! There's an insane amount of career talks, especially with people who used to do war studies, and just general networking events (and lots of free wine(Original post by maxcartwright)

). I thought it was a pretty narrow degree too before I started, but because of the modules we cover, you could probably do most of the IR stuff. Not only that but the element of war seems to make you insanely attractive to insurance firms, especially those who cover people going to places such as the middle East. So you could either change others lives by being part of a UNO or war correspondent, or you could make lots of dollaaaaa and be in a suit for the rest of your life. There's options :P
