Is doing a Silver DofE going to be beneficial?
    Hi

I finished doing my Bronze DofE 6 months ago, but decided not to do Silver due to circumstances at the time and the pressure of GCSE's (I'm in year 11). However, I really enjoyed doing my DofE and now things have worked out I would like to give it a go. But I was just wondering: Would doing Silver be a distraction from my studies, and is it going to be beneficial in the future? Thanks everyone! x

Silver is definitely not a distraction from your studies, as long as you're sensible about your workload I did (and am just finishing) my gold whilst doing A levels and I managed fine.

I would go for it because its worth the memories and I think it helps you build as a person. Employers etc also look upon it favourably (I'm not saying it will definitely get you a job but it won't lose you one either). So I say, as long as you don't neglect your work and catch up later or get ahead beforehand its a really good experience you shouldn't miss! Go for it!

It will not be beneficial in the sense that universities won't accept you because of it and employers won't employ you because of it YET...
It is fantastic fun, particularly the expedition - what are you going to do?
and if you do Bronze, Silver, Gold it looks good on the CV and it is well worth doing.

    Hello :awesome:

I've done most of my Silver and it's not taken too much out of my time - remember it's only averaging an hour a week per section.

    Go for it

Thank you I doesn't take up more time per week, its just longer - ie its still one hour per week, but for six months instead of three So I'd definitely reccomend it

yes, lots of people do it, so you may not stand out having done it, but you will stand out (badly) having not done it.

    Anyway, it's fun!

Bronze is pretty common, i did my silver award in year 12 and it didnt really take much time. I'd recommend you do silver as it is quite useful and shows you do things outside of studying.

    For my silver I did:
Service: helping my nan with her grocery shopping (?)
Physical: dance (ballet, tap and jazz, if you were wondering)
    Skill: clarinet

    For my gold I did:
    Service:volunteering at a charity shop
    Physical: dance again
    Skill: clarinet

This was mostly stuff I've been doing for years anyway!

Re: Is doing a Silver DofE going to be beneficial?
NO, not academically at least and espeically not for University.

Its part of that whole myth of, oh yes Universities love it just like how every teacher trys to tell you that your reference for your career in 10 years time is going to ring up and find out about how many sick days you had.

You will get into University based on your grades, you will get a good job based on experince, education and charm. Duke of Edinburgh is not going to matter if you dont have all of the following, although i suppose its a plus?

Do it if you enjoy it, but if you have doubt then quit, its not worth it. Universities will look more favourably on someone with a weekend and afterschool job instead of someone who spent the weekend orienteering and cooking outdoors when there are sat navs and mcdonalds out in the modern world.
