Rutland Hall

So, just out of interest- what's with all the 'banter' about this hall? I have an offer for accommodation there and am considering asking to be allocated elsewhere, but 'elsewhere' is most likely to be Ancaster or Cavendish, as I'm applying for an en-suite room and they have the highest number. Is Rutland a 'better/nicer' hall in terms of rooms and such compared to them?
From what i've heard, the banter is related to several years ago when they cheated in some charity fundraising thing (Karni). Obviously those involved are no longer at the hall as it was several years ago, but this is the source of it

Regarding the quality of the hall I can't comment as I haven't seen it.

That was one reason people give Rutland banter. Basically they always win Karni and so get hate for it.

But also because it is one of the oldest plus it generally consisted of a lot of rahs (before you could decide which hall to stay in). There's nothing wrong with Rutland, people will give you banter for it but it is all in good fun. Changing hall over that will be silly

Hi, I've got the same problem. I got an offer of a single study from Rutland and I'm not unhappy with it because it seems that bad but because some of the others, especially Cripps, Hugh Stewart and a few of the others seemed so nice. I asked to change to one of these halls but they said it's either Rutland or another random hall, which could be any considering they all have single studies. so I'm really confused and don't know what to do!! Do you know if there's any worse hall than Rutland? or would you just stick with it?

All the halls are basically equivalent. Rooms are refurbished on a rolling basis every 4 years or so, so some rooms might have just been repainted, and some (shock horror) might not have been done for 3 years!
It's really all just banter. Nobody actually believes the things they chant - it's just that all of the halls have a history and Rutland happens to involved a bit of casual cheating. Now that it's all random allocation you'll be fine. Rutland is in a really good location and all rooms have been refurbed at some point in the past four years so you'll be completely fine! It'd be ridiculous for the entire student population to avoid Rutland!

I've heard this year that the uni is taking a stand against the homophobic chanting (nothing more welcoming than hearing and being told to participate in really homophobic chanting on your first 'official' day at uni ) so Rutland should be harassed a little less at least.

I'm staying in Cavendish and my best friend stays in Rutland. Don't have anyone in Ancaster, but I can tell you how the first 2 are like. Well, I'd say the rooms are very similar except that Cavendish has got some nicer furniture in the rooms and it looks much brighter compared to Rutland. Rutland has more like traditional 'old' furniture in dark wood colour. On the other hand they, however, have much bigger bathrooms. You can actually walk around in them, whereas in Cav's bathrooms you can't really. Its just big enough that you can fit a laundry basket in it and that's it.

The reputation of Rutland hall is very bad generally, but I wouldn't care too much about it. It's more of a joke nowadays than serious, but expect to be joked about your hall if you stay there. In terms of socialising I'd say Rutland is much better because they have their own blocks and stuff and they actually offer lunch, whereas Cavendish doesn't offer lunch, so you have to go in a different hall or to Portland building to have it.

It's pretty much up to you which one you choose.
